Home Network Problem - identification as "unknown"

Post by Executioner »

I have no idea how to fix this -

1st is running xp with sp1
2nd is running xp with sp2

When I double-click on network places with the first pc, it displays the computer as "unknown", but it says "local network" for network location. I have all the drives shared, but on pc#2, it won't allow me to view the contents on 2 dirves (it has C, D, E, F, & G). Drives F and G are not acceable from pc#2, only C, D, & E.

Forgot to mention that I also get this error:
Not enough server storage is available to process this command
from the second pc trying to access the first pc. I was able to fix this command by following these steps:
======================================
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNotEnoughServerStorage.htm

Not enough server storage is available to process this command.

Not enough memory to complete transaction. Close some applications and retry.

These error messages can indicate the IRPStackSize bug on the other machine (the server that has the share). On that computer open the event log and check for event ID 2011. If this is present, it is a strong indication for this particular bug.

To repair it, you have to reset the IRPStackSize parameter back to its default value of 15 on the server where the share is.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
\SYSTEM
\CurrentControlSet
\Services
\lanmanserver
\parameters

Check for the presence of a value named IRPStackSize. If it doesn't exist, create it as type DWORD. With base set to decimal, enter the value 15.

Reboot the computer.

One frequent culprit is Norton AntiVirus, which tends to change this parameter.

Check also this Microsoft Knowledge Base article. It does not mention Windows XP, but applies to XP as well.

Antivirus Software May Cause Event ID 2011 (Q177078)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/177078/
========================================
Used event viewer and I had the 2011 error.

I looked at mine, and IRPStackSize was set to 11. I did have Norton 2003 installed at one time (no longer - been using AVG for a while), so I don't know if that was the problem or not, but hell, this might be another reason not to use any Norton product.

The only issue I have now is with my pc being listed at "unknown" in network places. I'm able to access all the shares now, but it bugs me that "unknown" is displayed instead of "Charlie" like it was before. Here is a screen shot:

I have spent hours reading up on this subject on Google via the newsgroups, and several people have encountered this error, but there is no soluton avaliable. You can delete the icons and such, but if you reboot and access the same share, the share item goes back to unknown.

What is really strange is the other pc's on my network display correctly when viewing the pc with the problem.
