Did I diag this right???

Post by Qui Gon-Jinn »

Ok.. specs first..

AMD A64 3700+
2gb PC3200.. 1gb is Corsair.. 1gb is Mushkin
6800GT.. PNY if it matters
Aopen DVD-/+RW Dual Layer
36.4gb Raptop SATA
120gb IDE WD
250gb IDE WD
320GB Sata WD
Soundblaster Live 24bit PCI

Mobo was a Giga-byte GA-K8NSC-939

it shut down last night.. and wouldn't boot.. tested the PSU.. via the short the green/black with a paperclip method.. powers up..

Reseated CPU/Ram

no Joy

Took it to the local guy.. only place I trust here in town.. he checked the PSU.. seems good.. then put in a Soyo Boot Test card.. No Power to the board..

He doesn't stock the 939 boards.. so I run to CompUSSR.. get one.. take it back.. he swaps them for me.. I had crap to do.. so I got him to do the dirty work..

bring it home.. powers up.. but USB kyb/mouse not working.. power down..
Plug in PS2 stuff.. power up.. don't even make it to the xp start screen and it shuts down.. no power.. nothing..

So I go to CompUSSR.. grab another motherboard.. and a Antec 500w PSU come home.. swap it all out and NO POWER.. so I switch power cords.. don't know why.. but I did.. and BAMMMM power.. boots.. JOY.. only thing it didn't see was my Soundblaster card.. get drivers.. all good there..

So.. tommarow.. I am returning the board I got early today.. get my money back on that.. it's DEAD.. then I am going to write a nice nasty email to Thermaltake about this POS PSU that I got..

I also wonder if that is what took out my Mobo 5 weeks ago.. same crappy PSU..

so.. did I miss anything.. did I cover my bases.. any idea's..

BTW.. all in a Lanboy Case.. and the PSU was a thermatake 480watt..

Thanks in advance..

How should you be so sure it was the PSU to begin with? You already stated with the Antec that it didn't work with the power cord, did you confirm that the Thermaltake didn't work with the new power cord?
When all else fails, replace the user.

Well it could have been the old PSU. Probably bad capacitors. It happens. Happened to me.

yeah I tried 5 cords before I gave up on the Thermaltake.. as for the antec.. I just grabbed one I had laying here.. I never just assume that a power cord is good.. they have been known to go bad with no signs of why..
