Which is Better?

Post by GuardianAsher »

Alright. I have my main rig, which is basically a Compaq in disguise. The specs are:

AMD AthlonXP 3000+
1GB PC2700 RAM
ASUS GeForce 6800XT AGP 8X w/ 128MB DDR
ASUS A7V8X-LA Mobo (Compaq)
Seagate 160GB 7200RPM HD (Master)
Seagate 120GB 7200RPM HD (Slave)
HP DVD400i DVD Burner (Master)
ASUS CD-S480/AH (Slave)

The first computer that I ever built had these specs:

Pentium 4 2.4GHz Prescott
256MB PC2100 RAM
Generic GeForce 2 MX440
MSI 865PE Neo-2 Mobo
Western Digital 40GB 7200RPM HD
Generic 52x CD-ROM

After nearly two years of not seeing hyde nor hair of this computer, I'm going to get it back! Which computer would be better to run as my main gaming rig? The AthlonXP 3000+ is of course... AMD... but with the Pentium 4, I could stick my gig of RAM onto that mobo and run dual-channel. It's an AGP8x board, so the video card would be right at home. And the processor has a meg L2 cache. I'm thinking the intel, but... any suggestions?

Every Intel based PC I use seems far slower than my AMD PCs. I'd never opt for Intel.

Ok.. my assesment..

P4 is a 2.4
AMD is at 2.167 or so..

AMD is better for games.. we all know that..

Not much of a performance increase really.. and.. honestly.. If I could have gotten my Laptop and the with a AMD cpu.. and the wife's PC from dell with AMD.. I wouldn't have any Intel Products..

AMD for t3h WIN

Just because I am an a$$hole.. doesn't mean I don't care..

i vote for the AMD rig as well.

Qui Gon-Jinn...remember that the GHz means nothing when directly comparing between intel and amd. :)

Unless you overclock the P4, the Athlon wins, although the 865PE is a much better chipset than the NF2.

Well, I think my decision may be made for me... at least, till I get a 64-bit. My K7 mobo is dying. Slowly but surely. I think I'll have to use the Pentium for a while. At least until I get enough money.

Buy a decent HSF and overclock that P4 then. 3.2 GHz should be no problem for a 2.4 Prescott.

It looks like in this case there's not much of a difference. I tried comparing a p4 2600 to an XP 3200 since that is the only XP processsor Tom's Hardare CPU guide had.

looks like you have the same P4 I have in my PC. It has been running at 3Ghz since just over a year now without any problems. I had it at 3.4 but it would crash.
All the best from the west!

Running that comparison, I think there's not much difference. It really depends on what each processor is used for. Either way, I'm stuck with the Pentium for a while. And next step: AMD Athlon64 3000+!!!
