Need advice from some Cable TV experts

I have Expanded Cable service, and it is shared throughout my house, but I don't want certain chanels available to my teenage kids. Is there a way to block certain channels before the signal is shared? I've tried wiping the channels from their TV's settings, but they know how to add them back in when I'm not around.

Anybody know of some device that can filter channels???

I dunno if that Vchip thing is still around...doesnt your TV allow you to remove certain channels?

There is a filter that the cable tv guys use but I don't know if you can buy them. They only filter out large blocks of channels also..like high band etc...
Thats why I love sattelite..you can lockout channels with a password so the kids can't watch them.

It took me about 5 minutes to get past the satellite passwords (C band) when I was 10 LOL. Just change to the satellite next to it and then tune it back to the good stuff! The VC-II+ lockout password was always 0 for some reason.

Anyway, yes the V-chip is still around and it works well.

You'll never completely shelter your kids from the bad stuff in the world. (blah blah blah enough said)

I don't know if any of our TVs have the V-chip, and I would hate to do it that way because they would just feel like "Dad is just trying to stop us from doing (watching) something we want". I was hoping to be "stealthy" about it, and block it like it wasn't coming from the cable company any longer. I wonder what Radio Shack could do for me ;-)

No really mine has a 4 digit code to lockout any channels that I select...
they might get it in their teens but I can change the code everyday if I have to.

What I've found too is that even though I can block cable channels, some channels that I didn't think were showing skin apparently do so at certain times, like late at night and teens seemingly know this (or surf onto them). My son's 16 and told me that he watched Kama Sutra on one a while back and said "they show eveything" in that movie. I havent even seen that movie but I've heard of it before.

That true Ladies Man. Back in my day we didn't have computers but I'll bet that every younger boy who can access the internet, even in school (maybe especially in school?) has seen more that we did way back when.
I tryed keeping my kid off the internet for a long time but he's now got my old PC in his room which is networked to this one as I can't keep him banned from it forever, it's life these days.

For about 3 years I blocked out questionable content quite successfully. I set up a proxy with filters and "hot" url keywords. When someone triggered a bad keyword, I'd get a nice message with the IP number of that machine. Since the machines had static dchp assignments, we could just look the IP up in my nice Visio map, and get the exact machine realtime. Then we could remote control the machine (ie close the browser, reboot, or send a message saying "BUSTED!!!"), or we could just kill their login. THEN we give a memo to the VP, and he deals with it.

Needless to say, people got the idea after awile.

Anyway, my point is that I eventually got tired of feeling like and being called the internet nazi, so I killed the proxy filters.
