ANOTHER problem with the Celeron. Sheesh.

Post by WorldIndustries! »

Again, with the Celeron. Seems I always have problems with this one. Mom's antique PII server is more reliable than this, for god sakes.

Anyway, on odd boots the BIOS detects my CD-RW, and more often than not, it DOESN'T detect it. I've tried all jumper settings, switched IDE cables, unplugged and plugged everything back in, but still the same problem. However, when the BIOS detects the CD-RW, it works perfectly fine. Also, BIOS always detects my HD.

Think it's time to get a new CD-RW?

Myself, I think I need a whole new motherboard alltogether, as well as a new PS, optical drives, case, the works. Seems I'm having bad luck with the setup I have now.

disappearing drives is usually a power supply on its way out. sometimes it provides enough power at boot for all drives to work...other times it does not. try a different PS and see what happens.

Yup. I'm willing to bet that's it, too. Took a look at the PS, and it's a cheapo ATX 300W, had it for 3-4 years. So, how much should I be spending on a new one?

antec smartpower PSU's are good, as long as you don't plan on adding a lot of drives later you would probably do all right with the 350W, go a few dollars more and get the 400W; good for the price range $55-60.

Okay! I think I've found a good one.

Ultra X-Connect 500W
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/ ... u=ULT31558

These seem to be a reliable brand from what I hear, as well as all these rewards it recieved, and a LIFETIME warranty. PLUS it's a modular, so I can keep un-needed cords out of the case. Not to mention it has an awesome look. =D

Anyone have any experience with these?

P.S. I found a temporary solution to my worn-out PS. Switch the on/off switch on the back of my PS off for a few seconds, turn it back on, CD-RW is detected! =)

I knew that, I just always refer to this computer as "The Celeron", because it's the only one we own with a Celeron processor, and the only one that has many problems.

Nice try at making me look stupid though, I must admit.

I assume you are talking here about the same celeron then in your other post, where you said

Got a power supply today, everything seems to be working fine. I'll probably be getting a new mobo soon, anyway. Maybe not 'til I get a decent video-card so I can get away from this on-board video I'm using now...

Mind you, I'm only sixteen, and student jobs don't pay as much as I'd like them to, so me buying stuff for computers takes time, especially when I'm constantly upgrading my guitars and and guitar effects at the same time >.>

By the way, I'm thinking of hooking up an 80mm 2-pin fan to the 3-pin system fan connector on the mobo. This a bad idea?

The third pin is only for monitoring RPM's, and isn't really needed.

It's only a bad idea if you make it to be a bad idea.... i take it this fan won't be going on the cpu/fsb correct?

if so, plug away... if not, get a new fan. that's what i'd do....

Bad newsss.
Turns out it's NOT my power supply. CDRW will STILL only be detected on odd boots. Guess I'll be getting a new mobo soon.

I switched the CDRW to the hard drives IDE cable, as well as the IDE channel, and did likewise to the HD, but it's still the CDRW not being detected sometimes. Making me think that the CDRW is dying, not the mobo.

This is extremely confusing.

Not to mention I thew a perfectly good PS in the trash when I thought it was broken >.>
