Another problem for you wizards to solve:
Ok, so il give you the short story:
my friend has a broken computer.
i go over, and when it boots i get beep codes.
i take it home, swap the mobo with one of mine.
works good (exept his HDD has TONS of viruses).
so i figure his mobo is fried. (i didnt have another p4 cpu (mine are all AMD) to swap that with, so it could be that)
his mobo was a ASUS P4S533-MX, but they dont sell those anymore, so i need a MOBO as simelar to the P4S533-MX as i can get.
any suggestions?
you guys rock!

Might be CPU, might alos be memory. Did you test the memory in another system?
Did you try resetting the CMOS memory?
If it seems to be the CPU or mobo. Might be better to replace the mobo and CPU at the same time and get a bit of an upgrade out of the deal.

fixed it, new problem
hey, this is fogus, (shmithers big bro). him and i were switching components around with other ones to try to identify the problem. we figured that it was either the mobo or the CPU, neither of which we had an adiquate replacement for (old pentuim 4 board). so i phoned my friends dad, the owner, and told him that the fix would be about $100. he said that he wanted it back and that he would take it to our local computer store to be fixed (i knew he would, but i wanted him to know by about how much he would be ripped off by when they charged him $250 for the fix). after we had it all back to gether we thought we would just check to see if it would act the same way it did before. (i figured it was completly gone, because my freind told me that he would often have his computer shut off and he would have to pull it out from the cubbord where it was storred (yeah, problem #1) and wait for it to cool off. happened during any kind of gaming or when left on for more than an hour. there are no fans on the case (just one on the PSU). over the years they have upgraded components, so the heat build up was incredible. you could cook eggs off the case sometimes) but to my supprise it booted to windows and acted normaly. i suspect that either some part of it was injured and needed some time to "heal" (i have had this kind of thing before BTW) or that there was something shorting out the mobo.
now for the next problem. when we replaced our mobo into our own case and attached our components and tried to boot, it failed. it would go to "detecting IDE dries..." and there would be about a minute of waiting and then it would quickley flash "none" for all the possible IDE drives. i fiddeled around with the cables and stuff for a while. reset the bios. loaded fail safe defaults. booted. nada. i need teh comp ASAP for my mom. Shmithers is off to camp now, and he will be gone for 3 days. i need to go to highschool at 10 AM, (1 hour 15 min from now). Could anyone can give me a qick suggestion as to what i should do? that would be great.
