Checksum Error Help!!

Post by dadx2mj »

OK I got a new case and moved my system into it today. System consists of

Asus A7N8X-E
Mobil 2400+
1 gig PC3200 2x512
ATI 9600 Pro
Maxtor 40 gig (yeah I know)

Anyway when I got it all put in the case it did not want to boot giving me a checksum error. So I pulled the CMOS battery and used the jumper to clear CMOS. It booted up and went into Windows. So I check and it is running at 533MHz so I reboot to go into bios and get the checksum error. Now the way it sits when I boot it up it shows the checksum error and says to push F1 to continue or DEL to enter set up. If I go into the bios I can set everything up but when I "Exit and Save" it restarts and just goes to a black screen. Fans and everything are running but that is it. Only way I can get any activity again is to pull the CMOS battery. If I go with the F1 it loads into Windows and all is good except I am running at 533MHz and if I have to restart I have to pull the damn CMOS battery. Thinking it might actually be a bad battery I replaced it but still the same thing. Any ideas or suggestions guys?

Have you tried loading fail safe and/or optimized settings in the bios and save?

Also, jumpers all set right? And be sure all ide cables are correct and maybe replug them.

But if the above doesn't work, I'd remove everything and have just the basics to boot and see if it works ok. If it still happens, try another or different stick of ram. Reinsert the video card too maybe. Even the cpu.

I've had this happen before a few times and sometimes the above suggestions work.

I've also heard about a checksum virus. I'll check google for that.

Not much came up on a checksum virus, but from a few years ago.

This may help, I hope:

I seriously doubt it's a BIOS virus. Re-flashing BIOS would fix it if it was.

Well the reason it's happening is because it's not stable when you set it to the proper clock frequency. That mobo is smart enough to realize when it locks up due to an overclock or clock stability problem and resets.

You sure you have the CPU clock and memory clock set properly for that CPU?

Did you have custom timing settings for your RAM? If so, resetting BIOS would have blown them away. I know on my A7N8X-E I have to use special memory timing settings for my Corsair XMS RAM (setting were provided by Corsair on their forums) or I'll get memory errors. That mobo is very fussy about timing and doesn't like the default SPD settings.

That doesn't explain why you got the first error, but it could be you glitched or shorted something when moving the mobo.

You certain nothing is shorting out underneath? No standoffs in a spot where ther's no hole in the mobo?

Might be worth pulling the mobo and running it on the bench.

All else fails it might be that BIOS was corrupted during the move. Try re-flashing it.

Hope this helps...

OK reseating the CPU has helped matters some as I s found my temp probe was not sitting where it should be and was touching one of the contacts on the CPU. I am up and going but things still dont seem just right. I can not run at the same O/C settings I was before. Thanks for the idea guys I am getting closer and will just have to keep plugging away at it. Thanks again
