Jesus man! $600 for a video card? Does it come with a BJ to? Like Bellringer, I'd be hard pressed to spend that kind of money for a video card, knowing in 90 days, it will lose half it's value.

I was hard pressed to rationalize the purchase of a $350 ATI x800 Pro several months back .

Seriously, according to Valve's Steam hardware survey the vast majority of people are running a Radeon 9800 Pro (or NVidia equivalent). I have a 9800 Pro in my LAN party rig and it plays everything just fine.

Having a really fast card is no longer a big deal. Most modern games (unlike older games) automatically scale themselves to the hardware, which is good for gamers. Heck I have a friend with a Geforce Ti4400 and he can play HL2 on it.

Id's say the cost/performance sweet spot right now is the x800 pro if you can rationalize spending $250. Otherwise get an x700 Pro if you need PCI-E or a 9800 Pro if you need AGP (I'm not up on NVidia but someone can post whatever the Geforce equivalents are).

my 9800 pro play BF2 fine at 1024 medium settings - I could put the settings a little higher in HL2 - but I really don't care as long as I get some of the eye candy and a decent frame rate
