Strange problem

Post by nitro237 »

My brother is stuck in dial-up hell . He said he always leaves the computer on , but sometimes he will be in another room and he will hear the modem dialing to go online .

I've checked it thoroughly and can find no spyware or virus in the computer . I can't think of any reason it would just start dialing . He says he always closes his email and all browsers , so nothing is left open to try to connect .

Any ideas ??

TIA

Does he have RealPlayer or any RealNetworks apps installed? They were notorious for calling home.

In Internet settings set it to NEVER dial or, alternately, leave autodial enabled but force it to require you click the CONNECT button.

I do not recommend allowing autodial. Anytime your anti virus app or some registration app gets it in it's head to phone home, it'll dial on it's own.

Had a customer a few weeks back who recieved a 2000 dollar phone bill. Come to find out, it was caused by dialers/spyware making long distance calls and/or 900 number calls. The machine was plastered with viruses and spyware. Porn freaks.
