My Lexar JumpDrive won't shut down. When I hit the safely remove hardware icon in the tray and select the drive, I get the message that the device cannot be stopped right now try later. Whats the deal?I know that it can take a short amount of time for the drive to finish writing the data but this just isn't right. Does this function just plain never work / does it even matter if I just pull the drive out / is there a tweak I can do to fix it? If anyone knows or has heard anything I'd apreciate the info
Thanks in advance.
...oh yeah, I'm running XP pro sp2, ... I've also had the same thing happen under ME (not that problems with ME are a supprise)

If it's a WinXP system you can just yank it after waiting to make sure the light it on. That's what I do and it's never a problem. WinXP doesn't use write caching on memory sticks so it's no problem.
Win2K does have issues because it does enable write caching for all removable devices, and I would recommend using the safely shut down feature on Win2K to play safe.

Windows XP DOES use write caching. You have to:
1. Right click on the drive in My Computer
2. Click Properties
3. Click Hardware Tab
4. Click on the drive and then click properties
5. When the properties window comes up goto the policies tab
6. There you can select which option you want

IMPURE: XP knows the difference between a removable USB device and other removable devices, and disables write caching for them.
In Win2K it can't tell the difference, nor is it possible to disable write caching only for one type of removable device so if you disable write caching in 2K it's for ALL removable devices.

I've had good luck with JumpDrives. My latest one is one of those rugged ones in a rubber caddy that can be carried on your key chain.
