GAH! Asus A7N8X-X Problem

Post by Busby »

Ok so I switched out motherboards for a computer at a place I'm doing some work for. The new motherboard is an Asus A7N8X-X. It works perfectly fine except one thing, the second COM port is a motherboard header and when I connect a bracket to the header, it won't find the device hooked up to the port. It see the port just fine but I can't access the device. It's not the device as the device works when hooked up the serial port that is accessible through the backplate thing. I have now tried 2 different serial port brackets. Neither of them want to work. I am hooking up the cable for the bracket correctly (it's keyed so it goes in only one way. I tried calling Asus tech support and I was promptly told that my inquiry would be passed on and then the phone was disconnected. I've searched Google and can't find anything. Has anyone experienced this issue on ANY motherboard? I'm about to go buy a PCI Serial port card and use that but I would like that to be a last resort.

There are SEVERAL serial headers all wired different. There is no universal standard.

You said a cable that does work in that header came with the mobo? You should be able to mount it to one of the serial jack brackets you have lying around.

They also make USB to serial cables. I carry on for connecting my lappy (no COM ports) to routers.

One of the brackets is an ASUS bracket so it should be wired correctly. The other one is a Startech.com piece. I thought of taking the USB approach but the problem is that it's a high traffic area and don't want people to be able to take things like that. Plus the USB convertors are also more expensive than the serial port card. I'm trying to get an Asus header pin configuration to see if that's the problem and if it is then I could possibly do some changes to the mobo connector.
