Upgraded Bandwidth

Post by dadx2mj »

I get a letter from my ISP today (Road Runner) telling me they have upgraded the download speed in my area from 3.5Mbs to 5.0Mbs and all I have to do is reset my modem. So of course I reset it and run to DSL Reports to check my speed. Dad is a very happy camper :D

Too bad my upload speed still sucks but I dont upload much so I guess that is ok.

What gets me about all the down with is where in the hell does all the upload come from and why is it so expensive to get?

i just switched from cable (3.0down/256up) to DSL (1.5 down / 512 up). i don't miss the d/l as much as i thought i would...but i'd sure take an upgrade if given it. :D the 512 up is much better than what i had. some day i'll get around to hosting something.

Gripe gripe, go back to 33k up or down like me and see how you like it :mad
what can someone really do with all that download speed?

Well think about it, what do most people do most? Download software, music, e-mail/spam, messages from forums :D
90% is download to the computer and a little 10% is uploading some text.

What do most people upload?? Email or one message to a forum after reading 10-15.
Like now, I had to download and read all the previous messages and I will upload just this one.

Alot of us do upload alot of stuff, but for about everyone I know personally I would say it's mostly all down hill

ME? I got a lan connection direct to the lan servers at the office, I go as fast as the net there, but what good does it do me? I get the latest patch from MS in 10seconds there instead of 10 hours at home :(
Got the office for when I want to download all those neat new program versions which are 30-150 megs and such. Barely upload anything from there. All the Ebay stuff is done at home and uploaded from here, takes forever, but this is where everything is at.
I geuss in the beginning I was doing alot of uploading too, but now I am seldom ever there, just run in to download stuff that is too large to download at home. I copy to a thumb drive or burn a disk and bring it home.

Someday when I get more time, I will start working there again too. Just been to busy with other stuff to bother working :D

For cable the main reason download is slower than upload is the fact that in order to transmit like the head end does you need an fcc license. Not only that but the head end only has to encode everyon's data into a few channels each individual cable modem needs to upload separately I'm sure that adds to it.

For dsl who knows probably because the vast majority of home users do more downloading so they cut off the abnormal usage people and save that bandwidth for servers and buisness class accounts.

I think what would be nice is if I could get a lopsided upload/download account that could upload faster than it downloaded as cheaply as I can get the faster download than upload account. I really don't see the point of selling bandwidth like this but they must do it for some reason. I personally think that reason is to be able to charge more for "buisness" accounts and not for any techincal reason.
