Is it my hard-drive??

Ok...my sister in law brings her computer to me and sez its doing funny stuff.
Its freezing up and sometimes it starts to open an app and goes crazy, a billion multicolored
lines all over the screen. So I replaced the MoBO and re-installed windows. Today she calls up and sez
its doing the same thing.
I had replaced the motherboard and the memory with new stuff. The power supply and video card
and hardrive are all the same. I ruled out pretty much the video card, because it screwed up like that
when I tried another card in it when I first started working on it..
So is it the hard drive?..or the power supply?..or what?

asumming the vid card is agp, have you stuck a pci one in to see if your agp slot is fried?

What kinda drives do you have, download the diagnostic tools for them to check them out, also make sure the vid card is not sharing an irq with another device

the lines she is seeing is usually caused by a problem with the video card, either there is a problem with the drivers, the fan for it has failed, or the video card is dying and needs replacement, I suggest you do what BillyGoat mentioned and use a PCI vid card for verification, after you have ruled the first two things out

As I said...I pretty much ruled out the card...or AGP slot, as this problem occured on 2 different boards.
Drivers are out as well...clean install when the new mobo was installed.
I'm thinking maybe the drive has a bad sector...it runs normally until certain things are opened.
The diagnostic from the companies website is a good idea...I hafn't thought of that.

umm... did you rule the video card out before you tested it with another one? if the video card is bad and you put it in another motherboard, it isn't going to matter, it still won't work right

I cant say that I have ever seen a HDD do that. We all see that you have ruled out the Video Card. But maybe try putting in a test card, just for sake of argument if you have one available.

could be a bad monitor cable too...check the pins on the end of the VGA connector. if it's a removable cable from the monitor it's worth a try with a different one.

In fact I did test it with a different video card with the same result. ...also, I brought the computer to my house and tested it out with my monitor and the same result. As of now, it has tested and working mobo,ram,clean install of XP, a recent power suppy (not a 15$ cheapie) and a seemingly good Ti4200.
I also tried an old 8mb nVidia Vanta and it worked fine until it bugggered up. I ordered a harddrive from Newegg for it....I guess I'll just replace things until I hit the right one. Maybe I should replace the GPU fan on the videocard as well.
