Network Printer

Post by daddio12 »

I have 2 comps connected via cable router. Main PC is XP, Secondary is 98SE.

I cannot get secondary pc to access network printer. When I try to install network
printer, It cannot find printer on network.
I can see printer in network places, but cannot install.

On main PC in device manager, printer is hidden
How do I get device manager to display hidden printer?

I have disabled/allowed firewall permissions.

Welcome to PCA!

Need a bit more info.

What do you mean by "On main PC in device manager, printer is hidden". Printers don't show up in the device manager unless they're special printers.

What make and model printer?

1. Do you see the printer in the main computer's "Printers and Faxes" window (in Control Panel)?

2. If so, can you print to that printer locally on the main computer?

3. If so, is the printer shared (is there an icon of a hand over the printer icon)? If not, right click on the printer icon and click on Sharing. Share the printer.

4. You should disable firewalls on both computers.

5. If you browse Network Neighborhood on the secondary computer, do you see the printer? If so double click on it to install it. It will NOT find drivers for it (the 98 system cannot use the XP drivers on the main system). You will have to tell it you have your own driver (use the Have Driver button) and browse to a local folder or disc where the drivers are located. NOTE: Some printers can't be installed this way - you need to install the drivers first. Find the instructions for your printer and look up how to install it through a network.

Hope this helps...

Yes

Printer is shared

4. You should disable firewalls on both computers.
Firewall(Zone Alarm) is disabled

lexmarks are pretty notorious for disappearing all by themselves (for me at least) I have an E210 and I have reinstall it at least once a month using the installer downloaded from lexmark - worth a shot if you haven't done it already

All-in-one printers do not make good network printers. Lexmark in particular. I would suggest you do a google search (both web and newsgroups) to see if anyone has similar problems and may have found a fix.

There's nothing you can do in device manager if the printer is working fine locally. Printers are not supposed to show in device manager except for the USB interface.

You might also want to try Lexmark's site and see if they have a special procedure for networking that printer. I've seen some all-in-ones where you have to select a different driver on the client computer.

ALL THAT SAID however, it sounds like you have a networking issue because when you click on the printer icon in Network Neighborhood on the Win98 system it shoudl try to install it, then fail if it can't find a driver. If you're not getting that far something is wrong with networking.

Check the share permissions for the printer on the main computer and make sure it's shared to Everyone.

Have you tried sharing a folder on the hard drive of the main system just to test whether file and printer sharing is working? If you can't share a folder either then you know it's nothing to do with the printer.

DO NOT use network names for the XP computer that has spaces in it - only numbers and letters. 98 is very fussy about this and won't properly communicate with a computer that has an "illegal" network name. Same thing for the printer share name - keep it short, sweet, number and letters no spaces.

You said you disabled Zone Alarm, but WinXP has a built-in firewall as well. Make sure it's disabled.

Hope this helps...
