New PC parts, OS too, Occasionally Plexwriter cd-rom causes BSOD with cd?

Post by EvilHorace »

I've noticed that on occasion, my Plexwriter cd-rom will crash the PC (BSOD) when I try running a cd in that device, even a music cd. It happens the moment it tries loading the cd and requires a re-boot.

No probs with the DVD drive however.

New mobo but I didn't change jumpers, each on its own channel (2 ribbons) as before with my old mobo.

I don't think that it's OS related (except now SP2, wasn't before the mobo swap).

Any ideas?

Note: cpu not OC'd yet either.

Have you installed the VIA 4 in 1 drivers yet? If not then do that first before anything. You're going to have major issues until they're installed.

Is this the old OS that was repaired, or a new install?

If an old OS, is this the one you mentioned in another thread that had DirectCD (from Easy CD Creator) installed as well as Nero?

DirectCD is crap and conflicts with Nero. It can cause problems like you describe. Also older versions of DirectCD are not compatible with WinXP because WinXP has it's own built-in packet writing utility.

If you haven't done it yet uninstall DirectCD and Easy CD Creator.

Are both CDs on the same IDE ribbon? If there a free connector on the Primary ribbon? Try moving one of the drives over there if so.

Old XP Pro OS, repaired. (Not fresh)

Via 4 in 1 drivers -installed

Adaptec Easy CD Creator (Direct CD) -gone

There is an old program for the Plexwriter called 'Plex Manager 2000' that's still installed and running in the systray. Perhaps a problem? I never use it so it can easy go.

Both devices are on there own separate ribbons (IDE channels), NOT both connected on one ribbon.

At the moment, I'm not sure how they're jumped. I'll have to pull them out to see later.

I tryed having both one one ribbon initially with this mobo but then the DVD drive wouldn't work at all (no power, nothing) but the Plexwriter cd-rom did work then w/o problems.

Uninstall it. that's probably the problem. You don't need it and it may not support WinXP. Probably some background app that runs every time you insert a CD in the drive.

Uninstalling that program "seemingly" solved THAT problem (knock on wood) but then NAV had issues as a result so I also then needed to reinstall NAV as well.

Gotta luv 'puters ;) One f'n thing after another.

NAV usually doesn't survive WinXP upgrade.

Didn't on my laptop but seemed OK on the main rig until I uninstalled the Plex program.
