now to the issue... I have had this camcorder now for probably a little over a year and until now it has worked perfectly. The issue we have recently come across is that when we turn the camcorder on to camera option to record, the LCD and viewfinder screens are black. If we try and record the recording is black, but it records audio (and yes, the lens cap is off). The other day we switched tapes and then it let us record so we just thought it was an issue with the other tape, but now it is having problems with any tapes. If we switch it to tape mode it plays back flawlessly. I don't have the time to contact Canon and deal with having it serviced and I would rather just buy a new camcorder.
***now if anyone has any idea that would resolve this issue that wouldn't require sending it to Canon for service or taking it anywhere to pay for service, you can have anything listed on here for just the cost of shipping or I will send $25 by paypal***
