Ok, I've got a D-Link DI-524 WiFi router and a D-Link DWL-G510 Wireless PCI card. I installed the PCI card and had a bitch of a time getting it to connect. Finally got it to connect after DISABLING WEP. Don't like this.. I'd like to enable WEP, but can't get it to connect. I know I'm entering the key right. But it finds the network then loses it. Anybody had any experience with this type of thing? I highly doubt that ANY of my neighbors have WiFi let alone know what it is, but don't want to take that chance.
Also, The router is sitting less than 3ft away from the computer I installed the WiFi card in, and my signal strength is at 50% what kind of crap is that? I'm very confused and frustrated with it at this point in time, but too tired to mess with it any further. Any and all help is appreciated.

I don't like D-Link Wifi NICs for that reason - I have nothing but trouble with them. Their routers are great, but their NICs suck.
Are you using their software or Window XP's native Wifi support? You should let Windows manager it - D-Link's Wifi manager is garbage.
If you can, I'd recommend exchanging the NIC for another brand. I prefer the Linksys USB Wifi NICs. They have outstanding range, and work very reliably.

Well, no connectivity at all.. I was online for a good 20 minutes last night after I posted this and went to bed, then work up this morning and it was disconnected again.. I will see what kind of a hassle it will be to exchange these with newegg, may be too much hassle. Not sure. I did get one third party NIC from my g/f I'm going to try it and see how it works.
I'm using Win2K not XP on this rig, and haven't seen any kind of wireless networking software on it. Wireless worked GREAT on my g/f's lappy with a motorola card, I had excellent signal strength everywhere in the house with is why I was thrown off by this.
Thanks All

That's the problem. Win2K has no native WiFi manager, so you have to use the DLink software which is crap.
NewEgg won't do exchanges, just returns. Easy to do online - just logon to your account, and click click, then ship it back.

I really don't want to eat the 15% restocking fee on these cards. I'd like to get them to work, but now neither of the three cards I got (one is an off brand called Planet, but it's the exact same card as the D-Links..) can even see the network, it's like it's not even being broadcast or something. Called D-Link support, they walked me through things I'd already done and said it should be working. I don't know what to do, I'm at a loss. Windows sees the cards in both my XP and my Win2k rig, so I know they work, and the router works as far as the wired portion goes, but I can't get it to connect wirelessly for the life of me on either XP or 2k.. *sigh* so much for getting away from wires.

You can't install another card without first UNINSTALLING the utilities for any other cards. Only one WiFi utility can be installed at one time.
Under Win2K you MUST install the utility for the WiFi card, and not just the driver.
The D-Link should work okay on a WinXP system if you use WinXP's built-in WiFi manager instead of the D-Link utility, so you can save the card for another computer, or maybe upgrade this one to WinXP sometime.
You're ALWAYS better off going hard wired than wireless if it's an option. Wireless is not as fast (not an issue for Internet but it is for File and Print sharing) and it's an increased security rislk. Even WEP is no longer secure - there's cracking apps that can crack a WEP key in a matter of minutes now.

There's another driver you can use for the card, I believe it's from an Asus product, that works much better than the DLink driver/software package. You end up just pointing windows to the drivers location instead of using the installation wizard to install it.
I have now installed XPro and still to no avail. It says "No wireless connections available." But my girlfriend can turn on her lappy and BAM! Connects right away.. *sigh* I don't know what else to do. I'll look for that ASUS thing.. Thanks guys..

Can the WiFi part of the router go bad by itself? I'm actually starting to think it's the router and not the WiFi cards at all. I found and installed the ASUS drivers and the computer says that the card is working just fine. The lights on the back of the card even blink. I have a perfect connection when I'm connected via wire, but get absolutly nothing when trying to connect wirelessly no matter where the router is. I guess tomorrow I will try to set up an Ad-Hoc network using just the cards and see what happens.. If that works, I'd assume it's the router and not the cards? I wish I'd have known how much of a hassle these things were going to be before I asked for them as gifts.

***EDIT***
Well, I got ansy and used the ASUS soft to set up a soft AP and guess what.. I know have a connection between two computers in the house, be it a week signal, it's STILL a connection. Would this serve as a good sign that the wireless part of the router is caput? TIA

It's possible. Have you tried resetting the router (usually a hole somewhere you stick a paper clip into and hold down for 5 or more seconds)? Also try flashing the router's firmware to the latest version.

Yes, I've reset it several times, flashed the firmware to 1.05 which is the latest no change, so I went back to 1.03 after reading several bad reviews about the 1.05 firmware. I guess the only other way to test my theory would be to get another WiFi router and see what I get. Or try to RMA this one through D-Link, just not sure where I "hid" the receipt. Thanks for the input FP.
