Geforce Stress Test Error *EDIT*

This problem has been bugging the hell otta me for about a year now.

PNY Geforce FX 5600 256 DDR Ram (Omega 1.6177 Drivers)
MSI K7N2G-ILSR mobo (BIOS ver. 2.0) (nForce 5.10 Drivers) (DirectX 9.0c SDK)
Athlon 2500+ (OC to 2111Ghz)
OCZ (2x256) 512 DDR Dual-Channel DDR Ram
Ultra 500w X-Connect Modular Power Supply

Ok, so im playing a game (from what ive seen on my comp it happens only in BF42 and Rome - Total War (map, not 3D battles part), then at random (anyware from 5 minuites to 5 hours+) the screen will freeze up for about 10 seconds and then the screen will become 1/2 assed and "pixelated" still playable but hard to see to some extent.

In the nVidia properties, under "Troubleshooting" it says:

"Silent Running: Stress Test Transition L2 -> L1" EventID: 106.

The time and dates are accurate with when the graphix "fubar" (as i call it).

If I close the game after the graphix "fubar" and play a different game, the graphix will be "fubard" in those games too. It doesnt seem to affect game menus or video or anything, just certain parts of 3D apps. Which leads me to believe it could be OpenGL or DirectX related? The random times it happens would indicate maybe a thermal problem?

I've tried different version of DirectX and multiple drivers over the course of the year.
I've edited BIOS.
I've upclocked and downclocked the card, board, and CPU.
I've checked the hardware.
I've checked different temperatures and that has not changed anything either.
I've even gone as far as to format the hard drive.
The only way to temporarly fix it is to restart the computer.

I've seen this in other tech forums but I have yet to see a fix for it. nVidia doesnt seem to have any fixes or info about it. It seems to be able to happen with most all Geforce cards so Im not so sure its the card itself. Something leads me to belive it might have something to do with "MSI" boards. (just a hunch from browsing other forums).

I'm a diehard nVidia fan and I'm thinking of getting a new GF 6600 Ultra or something, but I dont want this "fubaring" (hehe) to bring down my views of the new card if the problem still exists. Im "ALMOST" considering trying an ATI card but not quite...

Anyways, if anyone else has this problem, post your system, troubleshooting, and fixes here. Ideas, tricks and "a final solution" are welcome. Thank you!

I did a quick Google search and I found a lot of people complaining about this on newsgroups, but no definative answer.

Best guess is it's a bug in the video driver. Are you using a Beta or unofficial driver? I'd recommend installing the latest Official NVidia driver from their web site.

If you just installed the latest driver before this started happening, then I would install an older driver or use System Restore to roll the computer back to before you installed the new driver.

Im currently trying the omega drivers. (Omega 1.6177). Ive already tried the most recent drivers and every other Geforce driver within the past year.

I can't really remember what drivers I used about a year ago. I havn't tried any drivers that old though. Got a link to older nvidia drivers?

Would "Write Combining" turned off, help at all? ....I'm trying it now.

It really smells like a bug. Sounds like the driver is throwing up that error falsely.

I would recommend you check the google newsgroups - I found several posts about that problem, but no fixes. It seems to be a recent issue so maybe someone will find a fix in the next few days.

I would also do a search on the video forum on Anandtech.com and Nvidia's forums: http://forums.nvidia.com/

If you find a solution please come back and post it so others may benefit.

I'll also keep my ears open.

I tried both the oldest nvidia drivers and the newest and that didnt solve the problem.

But as far turning off "write combining" it hasnt allowed the graphix to screw up. Theres a few pauses here and there, but much better so far.... I see a decrease in performance though.

I turned off "Write combining", then turned it back on the next day and reboot. I havent had any trouble yet! Possable soulution?
