HDTV Question

Post by eGoCeNTRoNiX »

Hey Guys, got a question here.. As some of you may have seen in my other thread, my 21" CTR took a dump on me. So I've been saving to buy a 30-32" HDTV, looks like I'm just gonna have to buy sooner than I had planned. Will the DVI connectors on the back of these TVs provide me with the same functionality as a regular monitor? Or will I need to scour for one that has a 15pin VGA connector? Thanks for the help. :)

If the HDTV monitor has DVI input, it most likely will work with a PC, but it depends from manufacturer to manufacturer. I would'nt recommend using an HDTV as PC monitor though, because the majority of text will be unreadable on it and because overscan can be annoying depending on your video card and the capabilities of the tv itself.

I thought maybe they'd gotten over the whole blurry text thing with HDTV.. I know you can't read it for crap on a regular TV. I have a Radeon 9000 AIW Pro. Just guess I figured this would be easier. I suppose I could always set up a 2nd smaller monitor for viewing the web and such things? he he.. I know, wishful thinking at it's best, but that's me. Thanks for the input. I did look over some other forums about this and they're all talking about reaching the higher resolutions but having the same text problems.. Many this sucks.. I may have to hit the goodwills and see what they have.. Sometimes I can find stuff cheap at them.. he he.. Any other thoughts/ideas/input appreciated :)

probably varies from model to model...but my panasonic plasma has a DVI that the manual specifically says NOT to connect to a pc. there is a VGA on the front for pc use. i don't use it with a pc due to potential burn-in.

No it's a differnt format. The DVI connector is for the HDTV box you get from Voom or Time Warner.

What you can do thoug is use the SVGA coonector if you have a VIVO type card.

TV DVI is different. I've had some experience with this. Clients have bought one thinking they could play games on it or use it as a big monitor. No way.

If you can get it to work at all, and often you can't, you may be limited to a low resolution - usually 800x600.

I'm not sure what kind of home theater you have, but why don't you just get nice monitor for text and gaming then get an even bigger HDTV for actual movie/TV watching?

This is really what I was thinking. I have a lot of small 13-15" monitors, so that may end up being what I do.. Still not sure.. Have to tinker with the setup.
