Super 32! (pics and a video)

Post by Pugsley »

Well awhile back if you can remember, I set out to build a delux 32. Well i built a prototype to test with and got better then expected results from it. So i decided to take it to the next step.. and build a full Delux 32... but that wasn't enuff. I did some modifications to the original circuit and built what i call a Super 32.
What this is is a plugin for winamp to run external items... be it a simple LED all the way up to and including fog machines and any other real world load (lights motors you name it). I changed it so that instead of running 120V items it now runs Tons of LEDs.
You can program it to turn on and off each channel depending on the music volume and/or the musics frequency.
It was a pain in the ass to build and put together.. but it got done and this is the results of about 3 months of screwing around in my spare time working on it.

The original prototype:

The 8 bit data bus in place and the start of the controll board:

I forgot to take pictures while i was building it after that so this is the finished board with all 32 channels in place:

This is the back after all the soldering was done. I didnt use a printed board.. its just a general use board so i made it work for what i was building:

And some closeups of the soldering work:

This is the LED section of it. It used to be part of a PCB checker. it had all red LEDs in it but i removed them all and added mine. Again i forgot to take multiple pictures while putting it together:

The front of the LEDs when it was finished:

The mess of wires that make this thing work. this was before i neatend them all up in a chunk of split loom:

And this is the end result of all the work. The video is only at 15 FPS so it makes the LEDs look much slower then they really are. It flashes much faster then it does on the video. I used Daftpunk's One More Time for the song because its a well defined song and shows up good on the Super 32.

Right click save as:
Video (about 30M)

Any questions/comments Please post them here and let me know what you think about it.

That's amazing Pugs. I wish I had the time to get into that stuff. I really enjoy messing with electronics on this level but never have the time to fool with them. Good Job! :)

Wow Pugsley, this is quiet the thing. I like it a lot. Are you planning on building this into a system? Case Mod?
You say 3 months of screwing around. Total work time in hours? how many do you figure?

The only thing that I didnt like in your Video is that for the first half of the song there was mostly activity on the left side of the board. I think it would look better if you would take some of those LED's and distribute them evenly around the board.
This is not a critic just something I noticed, and of course I dont know how much work that would be to change around.
All in all "great job"
All the best from the west!

Oh no movement involved... thats just the coinfig i have... i have another that its on both ends at once... the softwaere lets you set whatever channel to come on at whatever tiem.

houres spent... duno like 25 30?
I can build more.. but the LED end of it wont be the same... thats a one off part i got lucky on finding. but i can make another using flat grid of any type. if you can draw it i can laser cut it.

there are 32 total channels on that thng. the outer ring is split into 8 channels per color +1 channel for the outer white ring. and the center portion is 6 channels (1 per ring) +1 for the inner white ring to make a total of 32. you can arrange them any way you want. as many on a chanel as you want. that wasjust the most symeterical way i coudl figure out how to do it on that grid. if i made my own square one it would be different.

Ah I wish I still had the time to play with electronics. Fun stuff.

I dabbled with early controllers - mostly built around early computers like the RCA COSMAC Elf. I think my ELF is still running a 2 meter ham radio station somewhere in Miami.

this is the one i build for myself... i could build yours with 32 110v outles on it that you could connect to parcans or other big lights.

well, I have a light controller already ;) ( it just does a chase )

I would be interested in something like that thing though

I don't use WinAmp though, will the soft for it work with any other audio program?

And what kind cash we talking?

ok first to see if it will even work with out winamp go to http://www.discolitez.com and get the pro version... its a stand alone prog that doesent need winamp to work... hell i should get it and see what it can do.

But as far as the hardware would go... i would say parts+ i dont know yet. Id have to look into making one for 110 volt stuffs. They have 2 extra parts per channel compared to mine.

I wouldn't want the 110 stuff, I would want a LED one similar to what you made there :cool :

and I will look into that soft with in the next week
