Poor Old Lappy and WiFi

Post by eGoCeNTRoNiX »

Man this is a major bummer.. I've got an old Lappy 200MMX ;) And I just bought a WiFi router w/4port switch 802.11G and the poor old lappy can't read or use the New WiFi card I bought.. :( I guess my laptop doesn't have a 32-bit PCMCIA card slot reader.. :( *sigh* Oh well.. Even tried it in my iPaq and it was a no go as well. Guess I'll just have to wait till the g/f gets here this weekend to try it out in hers. I'm curious to see what the neighbors have got hooked up around here (if anything). The box says these things have pretty good range. I wonder how good it really is... Anybody know if there's a way around this BTW?

Thanks!

i suggest trying a orinoco gold/silver 802.11b card; you may want to avoid the newer proxim (new company name) cards as they may require a 32bit pcmcia slot. orinoco gold cards were the favorite of the war driving community since they had a builtin pigtail adapter, firmware-changeable MAC addresses, and driver support in every OS.

I have a couple of Dell WiFi PCMCIA cards in my laptops that are re-badged Orinoco Gold cards. I LOVE 'em. Don't think Dell sells them anymore though.
