Asus P4PE mobo - anyone using the built in audio?

Post by Executioner »

I'm getting ready to upgrade my aging system, as evident by my xp/win2k poll.

I have this P4PE mobo, and it has built in audio. Just wondering how good this audio is? I currently have a Turtle Beach sound card which I have never had any issue with, so I don't know if it's worth transplanting it to the new mobo, or use the built in audio on the mobo.

According to Asus:
The SoundMAX Digital Audio System is the industry's highest performance and most reliable audio solution for business professionals, audiophiles, musicians, and gamers. SoundMAX Digital Audio System can output 5.1 channel surround sound and features state-of-the-art DLS2 MIDI synthesizer with Yamaha DLSbyXG sound set, 5.1 Virtual Theater™ and supports all major game audio technologies including Microsoft DirectX™ 8.0, Microsoft DirectSound 3D™, A3D, MacroFX, ZoomFX, MultiDrive 5.1, A3D and EAX.

You're probably better off with the Turtle Beach. SoundMax audio chips are so-so.

Mind you it's not a BAD audio chip, and if you just play games and listen to MP3's it's probably just fine. But if you're fussy the Turtle Beach will probably sound a bit better unless it's a real old card.

I like C-Media onboard audio chips. They're nice performers and most of the newer mobos use them.

OK thanks. The Turtle Beach card is a few years old.
