SLK948U and Vantec Tornado 92mm - HELP!

Post by -vox »

It seems like it's taking way too much force to get the fan wire clip over the screw holes on the vantec tornado 92mmx92mmx38mm. The bottom of the fan clip hits the bottom part of the fan and tends to push the fan off center as you engage the points of the fan clip into the holes.

Should this be happening? The fan clip wires seem to be getting bent. I am worried the kind of force I have to apply to get this thing will eventually bed the fins of the heatsink, they are extremely thin and fragile.

oh and another thing, when I was removing the plastic sticker covering the bottom interface of the heatsink some of the glue from the sticker came off, I cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol so hopefully it'll be okay. One anoth thing there is a small dark cricle on the bottom of the heatsink, on the contact area, very small but noticeable. Think I should return it? I'm not sure what it is but I scrubbed at it hard, couldn't get it off =/

(this is on an amd64 3400+ and Chaintech-VNF3-250 mobo)

I think that 'black' spot might be a heat contact point? but thats just a guess, leave it to the gurus here to find out for sure ;)

Umm, turn the clip around? Just guessing here, but when I had the problem, (slaps forehead) it was because the clips were facing the wrong direction.

Oh, and make sure you have the clips mounted into the right holes for the fan size your mounting as well.

For install tips, see here and choose the one you have, and clip or bolt on.

Practice getting the clips on the fan before you install the heatsink on the cpu, so you don't damage the cpu core. They can be pretty tight. But secure. I've had one fly across the room when it slipped off as I was trying to get it on.

You will need to keep a firm grip on one side of the fan so it stays on, while attaching a clip to the other side, while still holding the fan on the heatsink, attach the other clip.

The 'small circle' must be a heat pad? Is it raised slightly? If so, you need something like goo gone to remove it. Then be sure and use isoprophl alcohol to clean afterwards.

welcome to pca :)

okay the small circle is only about 1mm in diameter. It's just a dark circle on the surface of the heat sink. VERY small. No amount of scrubbing with isopropyl alcohol would get it off. I installed heatsink fine though, 1 and 1/2 small grians of uncooked rice, didn't remove it to check contact because I Thought that'd increase chance of air bubbles. Was actually worried that amount would be TOO much because as you all probably know the bottom of the SLK948u is smaller than most heatsinks and it doesn't entirely cover the heat spreader of an A64. I was surprised at the amount of force they said to apply- to screw the screws till they bottom out.

I am sure i have the clips going the right way. Yea i see what you mean if you turned them the wrong way they would hit the fan much sooner and it would be impossible without (bending them ALOT) to get them over the screwholes on the fan.

My solution though, just cut off a bit of the fan. I've seen how it is "supposed" to work on the 80x25mm fan I tried. There was no contact between the wire clips and any part of the fan except around the screwholes on top where the clips latch on. A bit of sawing should do the job ( and it's okay since I never plan to use the fan as a case fan.
