How quick can you kill your power supply?

Post by glassoftea »

Craziest thing I've ever seen today, I shut down my wife's PC to reboot, the computer "hung" on the shutting down windows screen so I let it set a couple minutes and then hit the power button, it didn't want to shut down so I hit reset and bamn, computer shuts down, then I hit the power button and blahhhhh, dead, dead, dead. I didn't have an extra PS around so I broke the entire PC down to parade rest to see if something else had gone but no luck, so I just put the case next to my pc and ran the power supply cord over, it fired right up so bing, PS went bad.

It was a cheap little POS powermax that came with her case, just a generic hunk of metal. So, I ran up to Staples and picked up an Antec True power 350 watt and I'm back in business. I little steep at 60 bucks but when you need something now you have to pay what they charge :(

The thing is, I have a similar PS in my machine, Its been running 24/7 for over a year, I'm worried now through. Think I might replace it for another antec but hopefuly cheaper.

Heh, I had to RMA a powersupply I got from Directron.com and while it was out I brought a PS from BestBuy. Antec Truepower. Good PS.

Although the TTGI series from Directron is pretty good as well. Cheaper then similar powered Power supplies as well.

I think it depends on the load..... A cheap PS will last for a while, if it is running on a PC that does not really tax it.
