dvd burner or cd burner?
dvd burner or cd burner?
Well, my old 16x lite-0n is dead. This means I buy another CD-burner or a DVD burner.
This leads to the question of why I would want a DVD burner. What are the advantages if I don't think I am going to make copies of DVDs?
I know I can put more data on a dvd disc, but other than that do not know why I wouldn't just buy another cd burner.
Which to choose? If I go DVD, what features should I shop for? Would it be better to wait for the technology to mature a bit and for standards to shake out?
Thanks

MY 24X LiteOn died a few weeks ago. I was in same boat but when I started looking at the prices of DVD Burners I just thought it foolish not to. I got an NEC 2500a and then found a firmware update that is supposed to enable Dual Layer burning. Wont know if that works until the dual layer media becomes available. For $69 delivered I am pretty happy with my choice. Being able to put 4.7 gigs on a disk as compared to the 700 megs of a CD is great.

LMandrake: It may be wiser to pickup a CD Burner for now and wait for the DVD burner. I bought a DVD burner back in September and while it is a great drive I just don't use it as much as I thought I would. More games are going towards a DVD format (UT2k4 and Far Cry are two I know for sure). Backing up games would be the only reason to get it and right now it's not worth it. Of course the increased data storage is another thing. Beware though, I've had issues playing DVDs with my DVD burner, specifically the Two Towers Extended Edition (Disc 1 in DVD-ROM, Disc 2 in burner). When it got to Disc 2 I had to switch it to my DVD-ROM b/c of stuttering issues. But I just recently watched another DVD (A burned one) with it and it worked. May be moody.
Oh yeah and while I added a DVD burner I also kept my CD burner cause I can't stand the 24x CD burn speeds of my Sony DVD burner. Plus 3 CD-ROM drives are just cool

i ended up with a liteon dvd burner (one of those 4x-r and 8x+r)
i use it to burn copies of the kids dvds which otherwise had a short life expectancy
don't really use it for data backups
takes a while to burn a dvd, but it's sort of a run when it when you go to be deal
still use a liteon 40x at work for copying downloaded games, etc

You might as well get a DVD burner for the price - it's what CD burners were going for a year ago. I can also recommend the Lite-on drives from NewEgg.

I agree, why not get a DVD recorder. Nowdays they can be found for $49.99 (*at office max this week, after rebate) and up. Like others mentioned, it also is a DVD player and backing up a lot of data can come in handy sometimes. Kinda an all in one drive.
