free HD transfer utility?

HI Guys.
Just wondering if there is a free drive transfer out there.
I just simply want to tranfer everthing from a 3 gig to 10 gig HD and make it bootable for my son in law. There are NO partions and should be a simple thing. (he running 98se)
I had an EZ transfer floppy from a drive I bought years ago but can't find it.. Thats kinda what I'm after, easy and simple.
And nope I don't have gost as I usually wipe and go for fresh myself.
If I must but Norton I will, but were talking old hardware and small drives heh. I hate to put money into such a basic task..

Ummm... what do you mean there are NO partitions? If there's no partitions there's no data.

Free? Whatever disk utility comes with a new drive. Even if it's an old drive, if you have a disk utility disk/CD from a newer version drive from the same manufacturer then it should copy the drive.

Failing that you want a copy of Norton Ghost. It's not free though unless someone loans you a copy.

Format the 10 gig drive. Obtain a Win98 boot floppy, make sure xcopy32.exe (should be on your 3gig already) is on it. Boot to the boot floppy and at the command prompt type xcopy32 c:\*.* d:\ /h /e /c /k /y then hit enter. After it has finished copying Drive C to D, shut down and remove the 3 gig drive, set the 10 gig the only hard drive. Boot to the floppy again and at the prompt type sys C: and hit enter. Restart, go into the bios and set your hard drive as the first boot device, save and exit. It should boot up to the 10 gig now.

I quit using Xcopy when I read this:

even though I've used xcopy with a win95 and win98 rig, but there is still that possibility that files can get messed up.

I would download the utility from the mfg of the new drive.

Opps.. should have said there is no more than one partion. heh.

Thanks Nascar definatly an option there but after reading that article looks a little iffy, but will probrably work just fine.

I did manange to find a maxtor max-blast floppy buried in my mess and thinking that might work even tho the target drive is an IBM, and the source im not sure. Guess I'll find out.

You generally cannot use a disk utility for a different manufacturer - they lock it to their own drives only.

Not sure how other manufacturers do it but the WD program will work as long as one of the drives is a WD.

OK that article is stupid. XCopy32 was specifically designed to copy LFN's. I love how he tries to give you a demonstration with LFN's but then uses the regular XCopy (not xcopy32) program. Well obviously its not gonna do long filenames. The version wasnt designed for it, moron.
