What DVD burner to buy ?

Post by nitro237 »

I'm looking at the Lite-On 811 or 812 what's the difference ? , NEC 2500 , Pioneer DVR 107 .

All 3 are around $80 - $90 , so which one is best ?

NEC-2500A

Post by eGoCeNTRoNiX »

I can now (after finding the right firmware upgrade) vouch for this drive. Won't vouch for their Customer Service though.. heh.. But, I really haven't needed them.. Drive burns on (locally available) Memorex 4X +R @ 8X speeds. It's fast and reliable. It hasn't burnt one coaster yet, and I've burnt over 100 DVDs with it. I'm giving it a break right now while I test out my new Plextor 708A which is gonna go in a different computer. If you decide to go with the NEC, LMK and I'll email you the right update for the firmware to get you set. Prior to the update it would not burn above 4X no matter what I tried. Afterwards it was tearin' up the pavement. It's also QUIET! I can never hear it. It's nice. If you have anything you want to er.. back up and want to try before you buy, let me know and you can drop by and I'll show ya around.. :)

nec-2500 has a firmware for dual-layer thanks to its younger bro
Hope my benQ gets the DL firmware from its newer counterpart.
FYI japan has DL disc and are ~11 USD. For that price you can buy the movie at Blockbuster used

Lite-On also here, but I'm not sure of the exact model number. It burns at 4x, and I've never had a problem since December of last year when I bought it. If I had the extra money, I would get the Plextor.
