As ego suggested, try searching for SiSoft Sandra and use that to check your temps as well
Then go by what nexus said and run a bunch of programs, then quickly restart and see where your temps are in bios. If its still around 40, then your fine
my cpu is overheating, ahh, help me plz

well this is what i've done so far
i turned my computer on today, i i turned on aida32 and mbm5, they read at normal temps like 25 C then in a couple of seconds, they changed, mbm5 says 75C, and aida32 says 69C, i opened my side case to check if the fins on the case was hot, THEY ARE NOT HOT, ARGHHHHHH, wtf, i'm getting super pissed at this crap, why is it so high, this is all on idle too arghhhhh

OK a couple of things to think about here. If you CPU is really in the 69-75c range and the heat sink is seated properly that heat sink is going to be very warm if not hot to the touch. Either you heat sink is not mounted correctly or you are dealing with a faulty sensor on the mobo. I tend to lean toward the faulty sensor. If you were running that hot at idle you would melt the CPU under a load.

ok, so far i haven't done jack to fix the problem, so i just cotinued on
i played warcraft 3 yesterday, the computer restarted, so i'm assuming the temp must have reached 70C, so the comp auto shut down, i opened the side panel really quick, touched the heatsink fins, they were burning up.
what should i do, suggestions plz pr solution plz

Hmm, several things
Reapply thermal compound to your CPU/Heatsink
Clean out your case of all the dustbunnies, clean fans and then the case....
also take the fan off of the heatsink and clean the heatsink off.....
Get some good termal compound, and apply it, I like Artic Silver 3, there is a new one out called Artic Silver 5, you can try that as well.
Test out your temps under load. If it shuts down on you again, try these things...
CHECK OUT YOUR VOLTAGE!!! My motherboard overvolts my CPU, so it runs way hotter then it should.
Check and maybe get if you can afford it, a new fan and heatsink for your processor.
Check your airflow, in order to cool down your processor, you need cool air to flow over it, do you have adequete airflow in and out of the case? Is there wires blocking the movement of the air?
If there is, clean up the wires, bundle them up and move them out of the way. If your IDE cables are the problem, get round ones. Those will help for several degrees difference.
If you do all this and still have problems, sell it ;D
