:p:p:p:ping INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE again! Randomly this time!

Post by CaterpillarAssassin »

Well. I got this computer from a guy at work that just started doing the famous inaccessible boot device stop error on win2k bootup. I've determined the drive is good (through seagates util). This is a P500 and I believe it to be on the i810e chipset. Its a compaq so I cant tell for sure. Only possible thing i can think of is trying to install new IDE drivers but i dont know how i can and even if i did i would not know where to find them.

Compaq Deskpro P500
128mb ram
6gb HD
P500
i810e chipset(?)

Any help is appreciated.

If it's onboard non-RAID controller then it's using the default driver. You either have a coorupt boot sector or damaged registry.

Only thing you can do is try to repair the boot record & or registry. Repairing the registry is not possible, however, if you didn't make a repair disk (and few people remember to). This is one area where WinXP shines over 2K - a simple repair install would fix everything in the worst case.

Fixing the boot sectors is easier. Boot with your Win 2K CD, choose repair, then run FixMBR and FixBOOT.

If the boot sector repair doesn't work, then you're looking at a clean install. Only other way to recover the old installation would be to upgrade to WinXP. I've had very good luck upgrading screwed up Win2K installs to XP, since in the process XP will rebuild the boot sectors, and wipe the device manager & redetect all devices.

As long as the registy isn't totally foobar, old apps should continue to work.

hmm. not what i wanted to hear. But I'll take it as the truth nonetheless. I have tried the fixboot. I'll try fixmbr. And no, unfortunately I dont have a repair disk.

thanks for the help FP
