Bad weekend with computers, this is a long one.
For me this is a wierd one!
A few days ago her system started acting up when turning it on. All fans ect... come on and acts as if it's normal, but nothing happens, no boot! She turned it off and back on, it booted fine! Did this a couple days in a row. Then I was going to use it one morning and turned it on, fans running and everything but no boot! I was in the kitchen getting a cup of coffee and I heard the monitor kick in with the thwange type noise it makes, I looked at the computer and it was booting.
When I say booting, I turned it on and about 2 minutes later it booted as if I had just pressed the power button right then! Right at the Biostar boot screen, the one before you would hit delete to enter the bios. I have never had a system take 2 minutes or longer to get to the splash screen or bios!
Well everything was working just great, once it booted. So we used it this way for another couple days. Probably a dumb thing to do, but I was too busy to rip it apart and she needed it. I did back up the drive to mine through the network just in case.
Ok, yesterday morning the system sat, and sat, and sat, but no boot! So I ripped it apart, was wanting to change cases and install larger drive anyway. Well I checked it all out, some things were dirty but I found no visable problems. Got it all installed back into the new case (same P/s though) and still nothing! Fans all run fine, but no boot. Messed with it most the day at home.
Took it to the office where I had spare parts. I changed the ram, Her ram is fine, no boot with new ram.
Tried a different vid card, no boot. Pulled everything except ram, vid, cpu, still no boot.
Out of time, so I gave up and installed her drive into my spare system, it works great so I gave it to her for now and brought it home. So her system that doesn't boot stands at, system board, cpu, and power supplie not being checked yet. Any ideas what caused this, and what it is?
It's a Biostar board, 1700XP, not sure about the P/s.
Between rebuilding her system at home, at the office and testing stuff, and then setting up my spare system and her old drive and new drive, updates etc.. it was Fri morning till 2am Sat morning!
Now the system I gave her had me chasing my tail Sat afternoon again, when we finnaly got out of bed!
Biostar M7VIG PRO, 2000xp,
This one first would not reconize the monitor here at the house. I had it set up on an old compaq 15" at the office when I installed all the drivers and everything, at home I have a 17"kds xflat. What I was getting was a distorted screen that was too big to be viewed. Was too big but looked almost normal untill a box was opend and those were like concaved and twisted. That gave me alot of problems, tried everything and nothing worked to reset it. Deleted monitor in the system manganger, rebooted alot and could not get it fixed.
Finally I turned the monitor off, and sure enough when I turned it on it was perfect!
Now I had resized and tried various color settings (black screened everytime) and reboots and everything. Even powered off the system and nothing worked untill I turned off the monitor and turned it back on. I NEVER had that happen before!
Now I get everything working right? WRONG!
Next Boot, system gets about half loaded and the power just shuts off! Next boot same thing! About 4 boots in a row, half or less loaded and it shuts off like hitting the power button! Power LED was on, but NOTHING else, not even fans.
Ok at the office this system was my play toy, always swapping drives around and testing things in it. Nothing was ever wrong with it there, except I forgot the -12v on the P/s is showing in bios as being -13.16 or there abouts. I was going to buy a new P/s for it but forgot that since it's not used much.
Nothing wrong EVER with it working though. Temps at the office are low, being it's the internet ISP and they keep the air running. It was a little warm-hot in the house.
I shut down the system for awhile to let it cool, opened the side and checked for anything loose, saw nothing wrong. Got a 6" desk fan and set it blowing on the cpu and got the system to boot next try. I got into bios and the temps were showing at around 69C
Ok as memory serves me, biostars are always showing me high temps. All 3 I have Show around 60C I think. So with the case open and the desk fan blowing the system booted and ran fine, I hit the net, and did some other stuff, but we had to leave for awhile so I shut it back down. We got home and now I have it running. Case open, desk fan turned off, so far so good! I checked bios at bootup, it showed 40C cpu temp. That was powerd on just long enough to get to bios to look at it, then I watched it rise to about 60C just sitting idle doing nothing.
I geuss tomorrow I will go to the office and get my artic silver and redo the heatsink. I just did this one not long ago though so it should be good. I was swapping parts then. Could it be the P/s reading -13C is over heating this Cpu? Not over clocked.
So any ideas on any of the above?? Is this just NOT my weekend, or has someone released a box of gremlins on me???
So much for getting the vans fixed and working on my wind mills this weekend!
