My 1st Attempt at Water Cooling..

Hopefully Not My Last..

I've recently aquired some goods for watercooling and before I go chopping up a perfectly good case to accept the setup, I have some questions.

Here is what I have :

Swiftech WaterBlock
Black Ice Rad
ViaAqua 1300
5.25" Plexi Res.
120mm Fan

1.) Should I have the fan pulling air through the rad (like a car) or blowing air through it?
2.) If blowing air through it, would the air inside the case prove cool enough to provide efficient cooling? Or would I want to have it pulling air from outside the case and blowing air into the case?
3.) Recommend a GPU block? I'm still debating on this, but I'm going to be getting a 9800AIW before too long and didn't know if I'd need one as I won't be OCin' it.
4.) What coolant do you recommend?
5.) I'm looking to get a Blue metallic look if at all possible to the water, what dye would I want?

Any other tips/info appreciated!

1. Doesn't matter, but either way the fan works better if there is a duct providing for a little space between the fan and the rad.

2. Suck outside air in.

3. Why bother if not o'cing it. You will just add more heat load to the water cooling your cpu.

4. Distilled Water and non-toxic antifreeze sold for Boat/RV plumbing systems. Mix 50/50

5. Can't help you there.

Thanx Mandrake,

So I can just make like a wooden frame to set the fan on and attach that the rad and the fan to the frame? Or is there a product you'd recomment? I'm pretty handy with wood and framing stuff, so it wouldn't be hard for me to make it, but if there's something else that will do the job I'll go that route.

as for watercooling...hold off on getting hte GPU waterblock until you get the vid card you want in there

The easy way to do a duct is to find a tupperware container or a similar plastic storage container th same size as your rad and cut a hole in the bottom for your fan.

I found a 6 x6 x 2 storage container at my local hardware store that made a perfect duct for my $13 chevette heater core....

i want to do water cooling... but with this SP 97 i have no need to... its quiet and cool.

Another question.. Is it better or worse to have more GPH? It would make sense to me that the more water it moves the cooler the CPU can get.. But I would think that there would be a limit to the effectiveness of this.. Because the radiator can only cool x amount of water at x speed of flow.. I'm looking at possibly getting a ViaAqua 2600 (found it for less than $20) or I may just stick with the ViaAqua 1300.. LMK what you think..

Well its accepted as an article of truth that more pressure and more flow are always better. You can get into overkill, like having a 350 gph pump straining to push water through a 3/8 hose and making heat itself.

Everybody seems to think that about a 350 gph pump is about right, you should use 1/2 I.D. hose, minimize or eliminate right angle connections, and try too keep flow high.

More gph is better, up to a point.

Stay away from the 1300, its junk. The 2600 is not well regarded either, but for what you are paying, I would go for it. Do a search for the 2600 at ProCooling.
