The second line of info, (below AMD ATHLON) on the cpu will give you the week it's made. After the first 5 letters, you will see the first 4 numbers, such as 0327. 03 is the year, 27 is week 27. 0309 would be the 9th week of the year 03.
CPU's , what's the best bang for my buck ? updated w/ more questions

If you can get to a computer show, check out the various vendor's stock. I found a week 34 Barton 2500 for just a couple dollars over newegg price, around the holidays. Barton 2500's before week 39 seems to be unlocked. Many still have some older stuff left, though the smart ones may bump the price on unlocked ones, if you tell him what you are looking for. I just tell them I'm looking to make sure they aren't bogus

2.2 to 2.5 GHz provided you have good case cooling and a good copper HS ( SLK800) with maybe an 80mm fan that pushes some air. Doesn't have to be a loud annoying type fan. Just one that does say 4K rpm or so.
As always tho, no guarantees when you OC a CPU. Worth a shot tho at $77 shipped for the Mobile 2400+. Has the Barton core w/ 512K L2 cache.
I have a Mobile XP 2600+ ( 2.13 GHz / 1.45v default vcore ) on a fedex truck somewhere in NJ. Prolly get it tomorrow or MON. I'm gonna shoot for 2.5 - 2.6 GHz with air cooling. That chip runs $108 shipped from Newegg.
I'll post back here in Gen Hardware with some results once I have it installed.
Read some of the Mobile 2400+ user reviews here.....

The reports on the XP M 2600+ are even more incredible.
Here's a review of an XP-M 2500+ hitting 2.4 GHz with a stock fan/HS ! LOL

Same socket A config as the desktops. Only differences are AMD does some of the OCing for you by pullling the cream of the crop cores that will run at rated speeds .2v below default Barton vcore and doesn't lock the multipliers on the chips either.
Life is good.
