Recommendations for a P4 cpu

Post by Executioner »

I have an Asus P4PE mobo and would like to know what are your thoughts on a P4 cpu for this mobo. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg for the latest cpu, but one that has a decent fsp speed. TIA

the 533 fsb 2.4c is a pretty good overclocker and reasonable - the 800fsb are obviously a little faster stock, but there's no headroom since you need to do a fsb overclock

aren't all P4C processors 800fsb?

I think the best value as wvjohn stated is the 2.4C I haven't found one yet that won't O/C to 3.0.

If you are on a tighter budget then get a2.0A Nothwood (400 fsb) but also a nice Overclocker.

Even if you aren't an overclovcker then 2.4 is the value sweet spot in either flavor (b=5333fsb or c=800fsb flavors).

BTW, nice board you got there :D

OK thanks. Yeah I got this new board (used) and another Asus (another thread about memory), to replce some of my aging pc's. I'm still using a P3-1GHz system running Win98, and a dually running 2 P3-550MHz cpu's with win2k. They are starting to show their age, since some of the video stuff I'm doing is very slow. Still haven't decided which cpu will be my main rig in the future, and the other will be devoted to video stuff.

If I read the specs correctly, the Asus P4PE motherboard will only support 533 FSB CPUs so I would go for the P4 2.4B. Most of the 2.4Bs will overclock to 3.0 GHz using the stock Intel heatsink and fan.

If 533 is the limit on the mobo, would a 2.4C work in this board and run at 533?

Yes but would be at 533.

Price between a 2.4b and a 2.4C is close (~$25.00)so invest in the future and get a C processor.

I don't think that the I-845 board (Asus P4PE) and a P4 2.4C are compatible. To get the 2.4C to work properly, you're gonna have to raise the FSB on the board to 200 MHz and I don't think the PC2100 or PC2700 RAM that works with the board is gonna handle that. Also, I'd read up and check on the voltage requirements for both CPUs, the P4PE may not supply to correct voltage for that CPU.

I'm sure I'm wrong, but it seems to me that a 533 P4 2.4B will peform close to the 800 MHz P4 2.4C. Your not gonna have dual channel RAM which is where the P4C's get their increased power.

OK, I emailed Asus tech support to ask the question: can I use the 2.4C that runs at 800 fsb in this mobo?

Here is Asus reply:
Yes, you can use the 2.4c as long as you use bios 1006 or higher and
also
please read the limitation

The P4PE chipset is designed for 533fsb, however if you follow the
above configuration you can overclock to 800fsb. However, overclocking is not
guarantee.

Best Regards,
TH001

I don't want to overclock, so would the C run at 533? The email was not very clear.

EDIT:
One item that I over looked was the heat sink and fan. Is the stock one from Intel a POS? If so, what would you guys recommend?

Executioner,

I do not believe the P4 2.4C will work at a 533 FSB (133 x 4) when its designed to run at a 800 FSB (200 x 4). Even if it does, the performance will be limited. The multiplier on the 2.4C is locked at 12 and with the FSB set at 133, the performance would be that of a 1.6 GHz CPU (12 x 133 = 1596 MHz). You'll be better off buying a 2.4B CPU thats designed to run the 533 FSB.

As for the Intel heatsink and fan, I'm using them on both my Intel rigs and they work just fine. The main thing is to remove the themal pad on the heatsink and use Artic Silver instead. My 1.6A has been running a 2.24 HGz for the last 18 months with no problems and my 2.4C will run just fine at 3.0 GHz.

OK thanks Mac. I'll be looking for a 2.4b, and I always replace the thermal pad with thermal compound.

OK I got another reply back from Asus. They said I can run the C but it will run at 533.
Yes you can run the CPU at 533 but it will not run at the full speed of the cpu
I'll probably still get the B to make sure as Mac said, since the multiplier is locked. I wonder if they thought of that? I'll email him back.
