Post by Demrok »

OK..
here's what my port forwarding page looks like for my router
Image

does it look like I have it set properly?
is there anything else besides this page that I would have to change things on?
because this doesn't do a GD thing....even with posting my Actual IP I can't have anybody get onto my server... it's really pissing me off

any other pages that you want to see? ask and I'll post a pic of them too

LMK!
Thanks!

umm... seems right... if thats the port that the server uses... it could use multiple ports... but i dont know how UT does stuff.

I don't know what ports Halo uses so I can't tell you if that's the right port, but if it is that should work IF the computer you're running the game server on is setup with a static IP of 192.168.0.2

Also make sure you do NOT have a firewall running on the server (make sure the XP firewall is disabled).

The other issue is since you probably don't have a static IP, how are other people finding your server? Are you using a Dynamic DNS service like MyDNS.com?

I tired using the static name thing but that doesn't work at all

and it seems that anytime I assign an IP address to my comp it won't let me onto the net... ? I dunno why but I can't do anything then
so i just leave it to assign auto

and as for IP there is a site that allows you to host you your IP, so by all proper theory...if I go to http://www.whatismyip.net and then give that IP address that should be the proper one (at least until my DSL reconnects)

am I right??

First off you CAN'T do port forwarding unless your server is assigned a Static IP on the local LAN. Real simple - run IPCONFIG /ALL from a DOS prompt in a DOS Window on that machine. That will list all the settings for your TCP/IP connection as it's configured now using DHCP.

Copy down the settings for the Gateway (which will be the router's IP), DNS Servers (usually 2 of them but might only be 1 and sometimes it's the router's IP), and Subnet Mask (which will almost certainly be 255.255.255.0).

Now go into your computer's TCP/IP settings and manially setup the IP and the above mentioned items. Use an IP address ending with .2 since that's what you defined already in the router's port forwarding (should be 192.168.0.2 according to the screenshot you posted). IP you specify MUST be the same as the one you setup for port forwarding in the router.

XP doesn't even need to reboot - the new settings will take instantly, and you can run IE to make sure you still have a Net connection.

At this point someone SHOULD be able to join a game hosted on your server if you give him your WAN IP (you can get this from the Status page of the router configuration menu).

The problem is that this IP will change over time because you aren't paying for a static IP.

No problem, go to DYNU.COM and sign up for the Free Basic service. You'll get assigned a URL like "DEMROCK.DYNU.COM" (for example).

They'll have you download an app that runs on your server and basically "Phones Home" every few seconds tellling DYNU's server what your actual WAN IP is.

Someone who wants to join your server just needs to specify your assigned URL address (DEMROCK.DYNU.COM in the example above).

OK FP I ran ipconfig /all
Image
I really don't care if anyone sees my IPs :) I just need to get his solved

now what? I see my IP routing is not enabled under WinXP do I need it to be? (never ran this before and this is a fresh install of windows)

Do I need to set my Comps NIC IP to a certain IP *192.168.0.2* instead of having it on auto assign?
and also it seems every time I set it to a specific IP I MUST specify a DNS server...
should I put my routers IP as the DNS ?? Ihave never put in ANYTHING as the DNS before....

LMK !! thanks!
*EDIT*

ARRRRGHHHH!!!!!! this fu@kin pisses me off.... I try EVERYTHING I possibley can and I can't get it to work at all.... anyone else out there have Halo? what happens when you make an Internet Game? Because when I make an internet game it says it's making a "network game" now I don't know if it should say internet game or not... but if somebody else could load a game and let me know that'd be a BIG help...
and FP, man I hope you can help me slay this demon... it's driving me nuts not to be able to get over this seemingly little bump...thanks :)

Demrok, read my previous post again, I explain it all.

You MUST set the static IP on the machine that you want to use as the server to 192.168.0.2. If you leave it on auto then the router will assing that computer a random IP every time it boots and it probably won't be 192.168.0.2 which is where the router is forwarding that port.

Yes, you must MANUALLY assign the IP, the DNS and the Gateway. By running IPCongfig you now know what those settings should be:

IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server: Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Keep in mind these are the LOCAL LAN IP addresses NOT the IP used by your cable modem, so it makes no difference who sees them. These are not publicly exposed IPs.

ALSO, according to this article: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=829469
Halo uses ports 2302 AND 2303 so you need to add 2303 to your port forwarding list.

As for hosting a game, you wan to run an Internet server. If you run a Network server then only computers on your local LAN can join.

Once you get it setup AND you have a Dynamic DNS address setup (such as one on DYNU.COM) then post the address here and me or someone else will try to join.

OK
I WAS trying to make an Internet game, but every time it was starting up it was giving me a "network game" begining type screen... but whatever
I dowloaded the Halo Dedicated server software
and I threw THAT onto another machine
now I have the 3rd comp running the dedicated server

I set all the crap up on that machine and began a DedServ game, and without even noticing I had people joining it... 6/6 people were on it!! but I couldn't join because my client was NEWER then the servers! (DAMN IT) so I reinstalled MY halo and patched the server to make sure it was the CORRECT one and now I can join my own game but Via the LAN IP....192.168.0.3:2302

my actual IP is 206.45.168.181:2302

now.. I have the server running as v1.031 so as long as you didn't update your halo to v1.04 we should be able to have a match..
I will leave the server running all night
the name of the server is Havocs Havoc so If you wanna try and join be my guest, post your findings here please! :) and if this doesn't work, I'll update to the v1.04 dedserv and see how that goes

thanks FP!

*EDIT* I just tried to join my game on 206.45.168.181:2302 and it was a NO go.... but I can always get on the LAN IP... but that's a given... haven't changed a thing since I first put the Dedserv up either...
I have the DMZ server set up as my LAN IP 192.168.0.3 (2302 is the game port) maybe even try using THAT ip to get into the game...??? LMK

*2ND EDIT*
Ok I am changing it over to version 1.04, update your games, and then try to join my server if you can't join it through Direct IP try joining through the multiplayer lobby, look for only CTF games and look for my server name *CHANGED*
if you DO manage to find my game and join it, hit F1 while in the game and copy down my IP address and post it here so we can all see what it is please!! thanks!

*3rd EDIT*
Ok changed the name of the server, it's now called Extreme_CTF
and I see there are 6 people joined right now, it's 1 pm on thursday (central time) I can't try it out online because I don't have my CD to use the update :( stupid me for lending it out!
