Wiring Question..

Post by eGoCeNTRoNiX »

Ok Guys.. I have a set of speakers that came with one of my old monitors. They run on 12v. Is it possible for me to take these speakers and incorporate them into a mod and have them run off of my power supply? If there's more that needs to be known, lmk and I'll provide. I know that I can if I have the right voltages, just didn't know if it was safe/unsafe.. Thanx.. eGo

depends on how many amps they can draw... if its just a crappy set of monitor speakers it should be just fine to run of the 12V leg on your PS.

12v 1.0A so I wouldn't think that's too much pull? Another question.. It uses one of those round plug-ins And there are three contacts on the PCB where it connects. I'm assuming that since 2 of them are on the same trace that they're both the ground (or power) and the other is all by itself on the other trace?

Is there a way to determine which is ground? Or does it really matter with this type of plug?

yes it does matter... there should be a symbol on the speaker jack near the power connector that tells you wieather its tip + or tip -.

If not... look on the transformer and see what its output was. then wire it accordingly.

I'll have to look at the monitor they came off of in the AM. These plugged directly into the monitor. They are JBL speakers that came with the Compaqs up to a couple of years ago. Thanx!
