Post by Demrok »

I am still trying to host servers from bhind my router and it's not working...
I called my ISP and he was thinking I needed to set my DMZ server...
I need to know how to do the whole port forwarding, DMZ server and also where on the web I can find a place that will host my IP (DSL so it's Dynamic...) and update it automatically...

i really want to be able to host servers damn it... :)

you need an acct there, then you can download their little aplication that sits in your sys tray and you can set it to check your IP address every x seconds.

for me, I have my acct settings in my router, so when my IP changes it will tell their server

I donno about that link you posted, I have only used the dynu.com service to date

I use DYNU.com also. It's free. All it does is give you a URL that someone can always find your sever on (because unless you pay for it your internet connection will not be static - the IP adress constantly changes).

You'll have an address like DEMROCK.DYNU.COM.

As for DMZ, all DMZ does is put a computer in FRONT of the router (so it's fully exposed to the Internet). For this to work you need to assign that computer a static IP instead of using DHCP (you can't use DHCP because the computer's IP will change every time you boot up and there would be no way to identify it). Then you go into the DMZ settings page in your router control panel and specify the IP of the computer you want on the DMZ.

Just be darn sure you're running a software firewall on the system on the DMZ, because it will NOT be protected by the router. The built-in WinXP firewall is adequate but kerio Personal Firewall would be better and it's free.

ok well, you only said servers, not a game ;)

you need to know what ports the game uses, and you need to know if they need your IP address or if they can use the dynu address.

once you know what ports it uses you then forward those ports to the IP of the server.

now what game?

:) sorry ! I thought I had said game servers in the first post (DO'H!!!)
yeah, they will need IP addresses..
and I have no clue how to forward the ports...

I have to know what ports to forward to what IP
Example... I have 3 IP adresses...

#1 Router IP
#2 Comp Internal IP
#3 Internet address IP

the ports I need to use are 8086, 9001
now what should I do?
