I'm using a Linksys 8 port Gb switch now and have seen speeds ~ 50MB/s through it to my file server. This was a major increase from the 11MB/s I was seeing over 100Mb. For the price I paid for the switch ($160) I though it was well worth it.
I'd stick with Intel NIC's though.. So far they've worked out great under Linux and Windows ....

Cisco (if affordable)
But others I'd use D-Link or 3Com or Netgear. I had a bad Linksys router that would cause massive ping spikes while gaming and I have friends that had issues with Linksys products.
