DAMN YOU STRAIGHT TO HELL!! LOL .
I couldnt get a ticket!! See this is going to be a total surprise to me, b/c I havnt actually read any of the books at all, and I actually never went out to see the first movie. Part 1 came on Stars and I watched it and my wife and I got hooked. We went out that night to see Part 2.
So Im totally oblivious to how the story ends.

I by far have the best story, I was in the theater and we were an hour into the movie and all of a sudden, movie cuts off and all lights go out. Power was lost to just the movie theaters at the mall I went to. An hour later, power comes back on, and then the General Manager decides to cancel all the showings that were in progress. Luckily we got a refund and a readmission pass. Went and saw it this morning and it was awesome.
glassoftea: The ending was way shorter than the real ending (the books). Put it this way, the movie went from the end of the war to 4 years later. The book does a lot of things before the whole voyage away. The movie was also pretty accurate to the books but of course they changed a lot for time reasons and other things.
By the way, I highly recommend reading the trilogy but beware it is 1008 pages. I finished it this morning.

Saw it last nite and heard all the reviews, "best of the three" "best movie of the year" and I had to say this is the first one I was a little disappointed in.
Maybe my expectations are too high now after the first two.
I have read the books and after thinking about it, I thought this last movie should've been two movies with some more information & time spent on developement.
It jumped right into the storyline and there wasn't as much character developement as in the previous two plus it was just too big in scope with too many smaller stories not sufficiently developed or left out.
It might have been the theater too, it was a small local one.

The thing is that the first two are purely character development. Very few characters are introduced in the movie. Only character I can think of is the steward of Gondor and he burned himself up. All other characters had been built and this movie truly showed their rise to their intended purpose.
However, I agree that maybe they could have excluded some of this material and put it in to the Two Towers (from the beginning) and done a little more. I would also have to say that unfortunately, only the true appreciative folks care about the whole story so parts of the book are left out because of time. The extended editions definately help with sticking to the book.

Beginning scene?
Not to spoil the movie for anyone who hasn't seen it yet BUT can anyone here explain the intro fishing scene in this movie and how it relates? That scene threw me off a bit.
It IS a very long movie and could have been a tad shorter. The ending(s) seem to go on forever.

I don't understand the purpose of the scene, guess we gotta wait for the DVD and the commentary. I believe in the books that they explained how he acquired the ring but I don't remember just how much detail they went into (i took about a year to read the books, took it VERY casually).

EvilHorace, what is there you don't understand? Like TonyH said, it showed how Smeagol initally got the ring after it was lost. Go and watch the first 15 minutes of the 1st movie again to refresh your memory about Gollum and Bilbo Baggins. Or you can read this:

Anyway I finally got to see it today, yeah the end dragged a bit, but it wasn't that bad. What an great movie, definately a fitting end to an amazing trilogy. I'll be getting the extended DVD like I did for the other 2.
SPOILER!!!!
One question of my own, why did Bilbo and Frodo go with Gandalf and the elves on that ship away from The Shire?

OK, That's what I thought BUT it's been a while since I last saw the 1rst movie so I honestly don't remember all the details and will now have to re-watch both again. That's always a problem when these multiple part movies take years to complete. Star wars was also not w/o similar problems trying to remember who, what and why MANY years later.
Yes, I too wonder where those guys all sail off to in the end BUT isn't that explained in the book (for those who once read them)?
How 'bout yet another trillogy to explain how "Mr Smith" goes from there to the Matrix
