Network probs in Win XP pro

Ok I was trying to get my realtek NIC on my nforce2 board to run in linux last night but it wouldn't so I threw in my Intel NIC and it worked. I lefted both cards plugged into the switch/router and booted into Win xp. Now my computer won't connect to the internet. I get a funny ip too, not the 192.168.100.x that I'm used to. I've removed all NIC's, reinstalled them, tried to repair. Took the Intel nic out. Still nothing. please help

What IP is it? 169.x.x.x? If so then it's not getting a lease or it's a cable problem.

Yup that's the ip I get. I can't figure out why though??

The router is working for sure? If so assign a temporary static IP address to the same as it was or different and see if you can ping 192.168.100.1. If you can then it could be a router DHCP problem. Have you unplugged and power cycled the rotuer? What does the network connection status say in Windows?

I know the router is working because another computer on the same network can get a dhcp lease. I've tried assigning static ip's but that doesn't work either. I now have both nics in and both have the weird ip talked about earlier. I've tried uninstalling everything and it still doesn't work. AGGGGhhhh

any suggestions,

Ok the situation gets weirder...... I did a system restore and the ip addresses were fine but I couldnt surf the internet or anything. Rebooted and the same problem happened. I think I might have to format/reinstall???

Shouldn't have to necessarily.

Do you have both NICs plugged into the router at once? If so, then go to the Network Connections and right click on one and choose disable. Have you tried doing a "ipconfig /renew" in a Command Prompt window? With the static IP address for just one of the cards can you connect to the router admin pages?

I think your problem lies with both cards being plugged in. Disable one or the other and see if it works.

How about the simple stuff? Try changing the network cable and maybe a different port on the router.

Screw windows XP. I tried everything mentioned above, one nic with static, every port on the router, it would actually ping http://www.bellsouth.net and other sites but wouldn't show web pages. I think it had something to do with the fact that you couldnt remove TCP/IP from the networking tab. Ended up doing a format/reload and it works perfectly. Something about having one nic installed and running with dhcp. If you put another one in it goes bonkers. Oh well seems like a format/reload is the ultimate sol'n to any prob w/ XP or 98.
