Ok, I am sick of loaning out my origonal DVD's...
If you use beta3 of DVDshrink upon opening a dvd it will automaticly set itself up to rip the entire disk to fit onto a blank dvd, but it will have a pretty high compression level. Most 2 hour movies wind up at around 70% (30%compressed) when you rip the extras, language tracks and menus so as to fit on 1 disk. Most people say you cant notice much if any loss in quality until you hit 50-60% compression, I can't say personally because none of the movies I have done have required a level that high. Here are some good tutorials on using DVDshrink http://www.dvdshrink.info/guides.php . Using the start/stop button to shave off the end credits and any un-needed garbage at the beginning is one trick I always use to save a few megs.

I use nero. Set your DVD burner as the recorder, select video dvd from the scroll menu and hit new. Drag and drop all of the files that dvdshrink created into the video_ts folder in the left window. The video_ts folder will be red, everything goes inside it-you don't need to put anything in the audio folder. After dropping the files in just hit burn, thats all you have to do.

Not sure how the new version of Nero is doing, but some of them have a problem burning DVD compliant disks when using DVD Video mode! The only disks I have that some players will not play were burned with Nero!
I mostly create my own disks, I use Tmpgenc DVD author and the program has a built in burner. I have been usig that to burn all my disks now, even the rip backups. Never had a problem with any of those disks not working in any player so far.
If using Nero, one of the ways to get better disks is to burn in data mode (not video) and set nero for UDF 1.02 That seemed to work better for me than DVD video mode, I think my version was 5.10 or something. But since I have the authoring program it's just as easy to use it so I don't even use nero anymore except for cds or actual data DVDs.
I'm doing alot of converting my VHS to DVD and home movies now.
So hows everybody doing with their new DVD burners?

I bought cheap leda/princo disks from shop4tek.com several times. I never had a problem but a friend has been less than happy with shop4tek service. They shipped him wrong disks, then was hard to get it taken care of, then took forever for them to do so. I was happy with my orders though so far. Those disks were cheapo and write 1x on my 2x toshiba. I never write over 4 gig on cheap disks as some disk could have errors near the end. I never had a coaster though.
Now I use Ritek G03 (2x) and Ritek G04 (4x) printables. I buy those from rima.com. I find them to be excellent disks and so far rima has great service, though fedex ground takes a bit longer to get the disks to me. Rima charges shipping, 100 disks and 100 DVD cases cost me about $11 shipping, I'm about central US.
Some places have higher prices on the disks but give free shipping, like shop4tek.com. I compared exact same disks and cases several places and it works out about the same price either way on 100disks/100case orders for me.
I may post a printer mod soon for those of you wanting a good CHEAP disk printer. Labels can damage your disks. ALOT of people have problems after putting on CD/DVD sticky labels, many people say it works for them. Sticky beware (like buyer beware
)
Several printers can be modded with a little work to print disks, though they may not print paper after the mod, but for a $20 printer who cares?? I built one already and starting a second now. waiting for plastic I orderd to make disk caddies with now, plus the fried shuttle system board and holidays slowed me down alot lattely.
I am happy with the printer I am using now that I built, but am having a problem with the paper disk cadies I made for it. Got a lump on the bottom and doesn't want to feed well when it hits the bump, but it's still alot better than writing on a disk with a marker! Till I get the new plastic caddie built I am now printing about Half the disk (to the caddie bump) and leaving the rest blank. Still looks very good, just not quite as fancy as I want.

Yes, alot of people report having problems of various types with labels. Some claim the little hub labels work for them ok and few think the very thin mylar foil type may be ok, but others have alot of problems. Especially with the thik paper CD type labels!
At least one person has said they tested a DVD R and it worked perfect, then labeled it and it turn to junk. Also the problem of some labels maybe comming lose while in the player and causing damage!
Ever leave a disk in a player for a long period then feel how warm it is when you take it out? My kid is fairly bad about leaving a disk in the player. I have had disks in a player over night and I could have used them as hand warmers when I took them out! Could be the temps loosen or melt some of the labels sticky glues too.
Several possible causes of labels problems. Thick heavy labels like cd types hold more heat! Could come loose. DVDs are more sensitive to balance than a cd, so a label not perfectly centered/balanced can easily cause read errors form wobble. Also a out of balance wobbling disk is not good for a player either.
I started building printers instead and use printable disks now. Till then I just used a felt marker to write on the plain white top disks. It works but doesn't look that good, so I print them for a more profesion look
