I don't see the point either. A 4 port switch is small and not a hassle to carry around. Plus I don't want to depend on one computer for network access

well, it would need to be in a server. And if there is a lack of electric plugs then this would be handy

nah its useless.. promotes daisy chaining. a good swithc will work fine. if you want multiple ports get a NC3131. then if 2 ports aren't fast enuff.. add a NC 3132 to it and then you have 4 ports. 800Mbs.
I have a NC3131 in my file server and it makes it good and fast at the lans. for home use its over kill.
