Setting up a router... but in a weird way :) ??

Post by demonmonkey1234 »

Alright, basically my stepdad wants to have the cable modem as his internet for his work computer, so simple task to set up yes, but the thing is any1 who plays Warcraft 3 knows that a router makes it unable to create custom games or invite players for an arranged team game. My solution was this. Since I already have a onboard NIC and I put an extra NIC in a PCI slot just because it was laying around :p . Well the thing I want to do is run the cable from the Modem directly to the Onboard so that way I'd still be able to do all the things I Wanted to do, and then run a cable from the NIC to the router connecting it to the Internet jack (Linksys Cable/DSL Router) and then run another cable from the first jack to the office computer downstairs.

Problems:

I'm not sure if I need a crossover cable or just a regular cable to use from the NIC in the PCI slot to the router.

As I go through the router setup wizard I get a message saying
"Unable to connect to the Router!
Check that the Router has been connected to the PC, or reset the Router to the factory default
settings by pressing the router's reset button for 10 seconds."

Is it even possible to run the connection to the router in this way? I would think so but not positive on that.

you can't do that.

why not open you on the DMZ and forward the right ports that WC3 needs to your PC?

Well you COULD do that, but the better way is the DMZ as Dpoey recommends.

Setup your computer on a static IP on the LAN, then designate that IP as being on the DMZ. Being on the DMZ means your computer would be sitting directly on the Internet (which is apparently what you want, and the same as having it connected directly to the modem).

I assume (I hope) you're running a software firewall on your computer right now if you're directly connected to the modem, and you should continue to do so if you're on the router's DMZ.

Everyone else will be behind the router.
