rat shack heat sink compond will come off easy in the future - i used it for years before there was high performance thermal grease...Like ego said, with the size of todays die's, you can do a ton of cpus....

Radio Shack compound will wipe off with rubbing alchohol easy. You will not want to overclock with the regular compound, but it'll work fine at normal speeds. The cheap stuff bakes and hardens if you overclock.

I'm suprised the HSF didn't come with a pad though. It looks like a piece of double-sided tape.

Evenly and thin. Don't just glob it. Spread it evenly.

The heatsink has a small grey pad on it.. I assume this is the thermal pad.. Do I need to remove it?? If so how? Also I have to apply a small dot of compound to the core right??.. Is it ok to touch the core? cuz I see a small peice of dust on it.. I read to put your finger inside a plastic bag...

Yes..

Yes, you need to remove the pad completelly if you're going to use compound. Otherwise, leave the pad on. But if you've got the compound, I know you do, remove the pad and apply a small dab (half the size of a grain of rice) to the core. You can put your finger in a plastic baggy if you want that will work fine. I just use a razor blade as do a few others. Just be careful and don't apply a lot of pressure. The core is VERY DELICATE! You didn't read the instructions Busby & FP linked to, did ya. :P

Don't touch the cpu core with your finger. You don't know where that finger has been. Only use a lint free cloth to touch the core to remove dust, or your finger through a plastic bag.

Use rubbing alcohol and a cloth to remove the pad, perhaps a razor blade may be needed too. Clean the bottom of the heatsink and the raised cpu core with alcohol and a lint-free cloth.

Read the instructions how to apply it. Or my way is to apply a tiny bit (about the size of one rice kernel) on the raised cpu core. Use your fingers in a plastic bag and smooth the compound on the raised cpu core. You want it very thin, and even. Be careful not to get any compound anywhere else, you want it just on that raised cpu core.

What's left on the bag, rub it into the bottom of the heatsink. Rub it all around where the cpu will touch it and rub it in good. Then using a lint free cloth, wipe it off the heatsink. This is to fill in the microscopic valleys. But of course leave it on the raised cpu core.

Then install the cpu on the socket, move the lever down. Then attach the heatsink/fan.

What heatsink did you get?

I did read the instructions.. I used a xylene based product (Oops) to remove the pad it worked very well..And i'm using retail HSF for now, only because I get a 3 year warranty with it, didnt plan on it.. but ohwell I dont plan on doing any serious overclocking.. I'll prolly be happy with it the way it is I might mess around with it later.. Going to apply the compound now.. Thanks
