removing a heatsink?

ok im about to remove my previous heatsink and install a zalman one
i plan on using the grease that came along with the hs/f

do i simply remove the old hs/f and clean the core of the cpu with rubbling alcohol?

also when i put my new hs/f on, do i smudge the grease across the whole bottom of the hs/f?
a thin coat against the core of cpu again?

any help appreciated

All I ever do is remove the HSF and clean off the CPU with a lint free cloth. Some people do use some kind of alcohol to clean it off.. I don't.. Then you just want to apply a thin layer to the core, and a thin layer to the area of the HSF that will be resting on the CPU core.. GL eGo

Dont put tons on the heatsink just a small dab..


same for the CPU core. Just a dab and smothe it out

so rubbing alcohol wont affect it in anyway?
and is it good if i use a paper towel with the rubbing alcohol

should i wait before removing the heatsink?
this pc has been on for about 4 hours
and after removing the residue
how long should i wait before applying the new grease

To wait.. It's pretty much a clean and go kinda thing.. Usually by the time you've shut down, pulled the stuff out, it's cool enough to work with. No need to wait to reapply.. If you use alcohol make sure it's nice and dry and try not to use a lot.. eGo

hey guys
i just finished installing the heatsink and am posting from the pc

in bios it says my temperature is 30 celsius
from my previous temperatures of 53 on bootup in bios
23 degree difference
and upon removing my heatsink
i noticed no grease on my cpu just the bottom of the heatsink fan


this is truly awesome
i would love to thank ego and seth for the tips and especially ego for recommending me to change my hs/f, from the msn convo!!
my pc feels completely new
now if i could get rid of the ugly zalman fan gizmo that came with it

now i know the difference between a 7 and 20 dollar heatsink
