anyone have recommendations on a nice universal remote? as i sit here on my couch i have 4 remotes looking at me...and i think it's time to get a nice fancy new one.
compgeeks has a decent sony remote on sale...thinking about that one.
i want macro functions and LCD display for at least some of it (programmable LCD...not fixed like some). i know philips makes a nice one...that's $300-400 though.

Remote..
Mritz was selling one a long while ago for $75 that was a complete LCD w/buttons that changed and so on depending on which device you selected, it was also programable.. I found this one at RatShack and I too have been thinkin' about getting one that learned and had the LCD as I've got 2 different remotes right now. Just a plain universal one won't work as I have a TV/VCR combo.. heh.. Soon, I plan on upgrading my entire HT setup. Gonna get a nice 32" HDTV and build a PCHT system.. Prolly get some Z640s or something for the speakers.. Then again, depending on the price and upgradability of that new LiteOn DVD player that can also read Xvid adn Dvix codecs I may be building an acutal HT setup like I used to have.. All Silver and just have the computer there to use as the "gaming" rig and use the TV for a nice BIG monitor.. he he.. GL in your search.. eGo

I've got that Sony remote you linked to. Its pretty nice: lots of macro capability, learning features, etc. My only beef with it is the backlighting on the LCD: it only turns on when you press one of the control buttons which makes it a bit cumbersome when trying to figure out where you are in the menus in a dark room. There really needs to be a "light" button that will turn on the backlighting when you press it.

Try to get something with a JP1 interface. You can program it with your PC if you build or buy a cable.

I have used this with some very inexpensive rat shack universals with great success...

Go to Remote contol central and read all about any universal remote. Great site with plenty of info.
