You're not copying your old drive, you just want to add the new drive as a spare?

Don't even bother with their software. Boot into WindowsXP and go into the Disk Manager and partition and format it in there.

Go into Control Panel > Admin Tools > Comp Management > Disk Management. Right click on the empty drive & partition it.

That ata133 controller may be adding to the problem.

What I'd try is unhooking all your drives and have the 160gb connected to the mobo master ide, boot from the maxtor cd then format it that way. It is very easy to do. I just did one like that recently.

Then hook it all back up as you want. If it's still having problems, then it's something with that controller card. I never used one so I can't help ya there.

You may need to download maxtor maxblast diagnostics and check the drive for problems.

you need to go into admin tools/computer management/disk management... you will see the drive in there. all ya need to do is set it so xp will see it. It already see's it but just doesn't see it as a logical disk if ya know what i mean.

You sure the drive is jumpered correctly? Is it on the same ribbon as the first drive and if so is the first drive jumpered correctly (some drives have a different jumper for single master and master with slave).

If BIOS sees it, it should appear in the Disk Manager. It will NOT appear in My Computer until it's partitioned.

Check in Device Manager - it should appear in the "Disk Drives".

I've never had a problem with their ATA133 controllers, but if you have a modern mobo you shouldn't need it.

I just installed a promise pci card. What I did to get it all to show up was insert the card, then boot to windows to install the drivers. I then booted to the xp cd to partition the HDDs.

You didn't have to low level it. Just partition and format. Shouldn't have taken more than 20 minutes for that size a drive.

\me suspects that you haven't formatted a new drive since to 20 Mb era ;)
