Like Seti AtHome. You're part of a distributed computing project. In the case of Folding it's to study protein folding. More info here: http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/

Supposedly, folding is trying to find a cure for cancer. If that does happen and folding is primarily responsible. it'd sure feel great to know we helped. It even feels nice to know that we are trying. ;)

Join up, you are invited. We can always use more members. It's very easy and doesn't interfere with anything.

Check out our folding forum when you get a chance. :)

my parent's XP 1800+ runs at 58C idle, 64C loaded and it's perfectly stable. I look at it this way, if it's stable it's not an issue. Yes, you may be shortening the life of the CPU a bit, but is it really a big deal if it lasts 9 years instead of 10?
Im serious try this first ! I killed at least 10 degrees.
those don't work as well if you use an NT-based OS. NT/2k/XP will issue HLT commands when the CPU is idle (System Idle Process in Task Manager.)
