I'm a P4 guy, so I'm lost. Is it because the paste is touching the other parts of the processor?

yea that, and theres about 10x as much paste as you need on there

You wanna know whats sad? I've seen worse :o A co-worker of mine brought in a PC (dunno who's) and it wouldn't post. We ended up taking the heatsink off and it looked like someone placed a marshmellow under there and turned it on. Shit was practically all over the entire processor... ....dumb co-worker asked "Do you think AMD will take it back?"

I did that to my second prossesor over 1ghz.
It was not my falt. I used one of those
packets of wight paste that come with most
heat sinks and it popped. :(

Many noobs do that because they think they have to use the whole packet of paste that comes with some heatsinks. I've seen it before, that's what they told me. It was easy to figure that out. :d
