why is oem higher than retail on cpu's

Post by canton_kid »

Was at you know where and a couple AMD CPUs like the 2500xp is higher as an oem than the retail boxed ones. just a fluke, or is there maybe some reason for it?

xp 2500 333fsb retail box $88 Model#: AXDA2500BOX
XP 2500 333fsb oem $94 Model#: AXDA2500DKV4D

I know newegg has been playing with the price alot on the 2500xp. Was $90, then on sale for $83, then $90, then a dollar higher each day up too $97, now it dropped to $88. But I was somewhere else checking prices too, thier oems were a bit higher than retail, so I was wondering if maybe they came out with better stepping or something to make them better. Or is it just goofey pricing?

Figures they would go on sale right after I buy one. When I bought mine the retail was $4 more than the OEM I went with the retail because I figured the extra $4 was worth it to get the 3yr warranty

hmm ive also seem that most of the oems are usually cheaper than the retail ...thats because you buy them directly from the manufacturer

Naw, I think the OEMs go through the same channels as the Retail ones, and your still buying from the same store for either and they have them in stock.

It was probbly just a fluke that I saw several stores with retails cheaper than OEM at the same time. I just thought maybe they came out with a better overclock on the OEMs again and maybe it hadn't reached the retails yet, or something similar.
