Why are iBooks so expensive?

As my signature reads I am currently the proud owner of a Dell Inspiron 8200. However the lab in which I am currently working is almost exclusivly Mac and I am putting some thought into selling off the dell and buying and i/Powerbook. SO I guess I have 2 questions; (1)Why are iBooks so expensive? (I can get a much faster and more equipt Dell/Gateway/Compaq for the same price as what appears to be a mid to low range iBook) (2)Is there any chance that the prices will come down anytime soon? or does anyone know a place to buy an i/Powerbook thats cheeper than those found on apple.com?

1 word APPLE. that is why they are so expensive. I'd keep the Dell its gonna do everything those apples can do and then some. you'd just be pissing in the wind if you bought an iBook.

I totally agree, however almost all of the software that the lab has is Mac only software, and my boss isn't willing to spent another $2500 each to get a PC copies of the programs we use (mainly genetic alignmant stuff)

Where do you work that you have to provide your own computer? Tell your boss to get you an iBook.

thats kind of what i was thinking donk... sounds like that place has money. Why are you buying a laptop to do their work on? especially if they use apples they should be providing them...

I'm a grad student working in a medical research lab at a hospital. My boss did say that he "might" get me an iBook in a couple months, however if he buys it using grant money then I'm going to have the Information Technology (IT) people on my back all the time. They're a pain in the butt to say the least and I was thinking that buying my own machine would give me a bit more flexability away from them.

if you max out the options on one of the dual systems its well over $8k

why a watch casio is $20 and a gucci $5000? also you are buying design with apple , well you are buying just design . well you are buying a apple logo.

possibly use a mac emulator? Don't know if stability's an issue w/ those, but I'm sure they're out there. Someone here might know more about it.
